BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction in women is a common disorder. Yet, there is no consensus on its treatment. Few studies have shown that Vitex agnus-castus improves sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women; the present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of V. agnus-castus on the female sexual function in the reproductive age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a double-blinded randomized control clinical trial on the women of reproductive age referred to the gynecology clinic of Al-Zahra Medical Center in Rasht, Iran, from February 2018 to December 2019. The intervention group received Agnugol tablet containing 3.2–4.8 mg dried extract V. agnus-castus (51 participants) and the control group received a placebo tablet (51 participants). All participants received one tablet daily for 16 weeks. The participants were asked to complete the Female Sexual Function Index questionnaire at the beginning of the study and after 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Data were analyzed in SPSS statistics (version 21) using Chi-square test, t-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, analysis of variance, and mixed model to examine the differences between the groups. RESULTS: The results showed that the difference between the two groups was not significant in each domain, but there was a significant difference in the overall sexual function mean score so that the intervention group had a higher score than the placebo group after 16 weeks (P CONCLUSION: In the present study, it was observed that the consumption of V. agnus-castus during 16 weeks was more effective than the placebo in improving sexual dysfunction. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to be able to decide on the prescription of this drug in the clinics.

The 4-month effect of Vitex agnus-castus plant on sexual function of women of reproductive age: A clinical trial.

Abstract Background: Normal sexual function is an important part of women's sexual and mental health. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of inhalation of Elaeagnus angustifolia essential oil on sexual Function of women of reproductive age. Materials and Methods: This study is a randomized, three-group clinical trial that was performed on 99 women referred to health centers in Mashhad. The first group used the essential oil by inhalation for 20 minutes three times a day for 4 weeks and the second group used the essential oil by inhalation 20 minutes before intercourse and the third group did not receive any intervention. Sexual function were assessed by FSFI questionnaire at baseline and after 4 weeks in all three groups. Results: The mean and SD age of women were 33.7±7.6. The mean score of sexual function before the intervention in the first and second intervention group and control group were 23±1.3, 23.3±6.4 and 23.1±3.6 (P=0.630) respectively that was not statistically significant(p=0.630). The mean score of sexual function after 4 weeks in the first and second intervention group and control group were 25.2±7.9, 28.2±4.9 and 23.1±3.5 (P&lt;0.001) respectively. Also after 4 weeks in the second intervention group improved sexual function in all areas, but in the first intervention Group improved all areas except pain and sexual Satisfaction (P&lt;0.001). Trial registration: The research project was registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT) with a code (IRCT20191203045589N1) and the ethics committee of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences with a code (IR.MUMS.NURSE.REC.1398.07) and first registration in 11/12/2019. Conclusion: Inhalation of Elaeagnus angustifolia oil, has had a beneficial effect on improving sexual function in women of reproductive age, so it can be used as an affordable herbal supplement to improve Sexual function in these women.

Evaluation of efficacy of Elaeagnus angustifolia flower essential oil inhalation in improving sexual function in women of reproductive age: A randomized, controlled clinical trial

Purpose: Sexual satisfaction is one of the main dimensions of family life. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Elaeagnus angustifolia flower capsule on sexual satisfaction and levels of androgenic hormones with low sexual desire in 2012.
Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 84 women aged 18-40 y old. The intervention group that was not suffering from hypothyroidism and hyperprolactinemia received E. angustifolia, while the control group received placebo (4 capsules a day, 2 capsules every 12 h, for 35 d). Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and enrich marital satisfaction questionnaire were filled out and the levels of androgenic hormones were measured before and after the intervention.
Results: No significant difference between was observed between the two groups regarding sexual desire disorder before the intervention (P=0.269). After the intervention, however, this measure decreased from 53.7 to 19.5, which was statistically significant (P=0.001). Nevertheless, no significant difference was found between the two groups regarding sexual satisfaction mean score (0.89 vs. 0.96) and mean level of androgenic hormones before and after the intervention (P>0.05).
Conclusion: E. angustifolia flower capsule was effective in improvement of sexual desire, but it did not improve the sexual satisfaction and level of androgenic hormones.
