TL;DR: The authors characterized lesion changes on quantitative susceptibility mapping and R2* at various gadoliniumenhancement stages (nodular, shell-like, nonenhancing) in 64 patients with multiple sclerosis with different enhancing patterns in white matter lesions and found that early active MS lesions with nodular enhancement show R1* decrease but no quantitative susceptibility mapped change, reflecting myelin breakdown.
