Effects of service-oriented architecture on software development lifecycle activities

Nowadays many new product development (NPD) software projects employ agile methodologies. Their basic premise is that a small, colocated team working closely together with the business customer can produce high-value, high-quality software efficiently with rapid iterations and frequent feedback. However, in large NPD organizations developing complex products those basic assumptions are not necessarily sufficient, and a more comprehensive view of agility is needed. On the basis of industrial experiences, this article presents a number of pragmatic suggestions about how and when agility could be utilized in large-scale (embedded) software product development. We propose a framework for understanding the multidimensional nature of agility in such environments for successful software process improvement (SPI), and highlight certain practical considerations. Some industrial case examples are illustrated. We conclude that in large-scale NPD organizations a holistic systemwide view is needed in order to really be able to take advantage of and improve software development agility. Reconstruction of Software Component Architectures and Behaviour Models using Static and Dynamic Analysis

Early detection and correction of faults in the software design phase can reduce total cost and time to market of a software product. In this paper we describe an approach for testing UML design models to uncover inconsistencies. Our approach uses behavioral views such as Sequence Diagrams to simulate state change in an aggregate model. The aggregate model is the artifact of merging information from behavioral and structural UML views. OCL pre-conditions, post-conditions and invariants are used as a test oracle.

Testing UML designs

Component based software development approach makes use of already existing software components to build new applications. Software components may be available in-house or acquired from the global market. One of the most critical activities in this reuse based process is the selection of appropriate components. Component evaluation is the core of the component selection process. Component quality models have been proposed to decide upon a criterion against which candidate components can be evaluated and then compared. But none is complete enough to carry out the evaluation. It is advocated that component users need not bother about the internal details of the components. But we believe that complexity of the internal structure of the component can help estimating the effort related to evolution of the component. In our ongoing research, we are focusing on quality of internal design of a software component and its relationship to the external quality attributes of the component.

A Metrics Based Approach to Evaluate Design of Software Components

During component based software engineering it is important for component developers to design components that show high cohesion within a component and low coupling between components. Empirical data shows that software artifacts possessing these properties are more maintainable. Current practice in design metric evaluation relies on extracting structural metrics from individual UML views. This paper defines a dynamic approach that collects metrics during execution of a model that integrates both UML class and sequence diagrams. These design metrics are used to evaluate component choices by examining cohesion and coupling properties. We base our design metrics on code metrics that have been positively correlated with quality. We provide an empirical study that demonstrates a positive correlation between design and code metrics.
