Nutritional and antinutritional composition of fava bean (Vicia faba L., var. minor) cultivars.

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is one of the foremost candidate crops for simultaneously increasing both sustainability and global supply of plant protein. On a dry matter basis, its seeds contain about 29% protein of which more than 80% consists of globulin storage proteins (vicilin and legumin). However, to achieve optimum utilization of this crop for human and animal nutrition, both protein content and quality have to be improved. Though initial investigations on the heritability of these traits indicated the possibility for genetic improvement, little has been achieved so far, partly due to the lack of genetic information coupled with the complex relationship between protein content and grain yield. This review reports on the current knowledge on Vicia faba seed storage proteins, their structure, composition, and genetic control, and highlights key areas for further improvement of the content and composition of Vicia faba seed storage proteins on the basis of recent advances in Vicia faba genome knowledge and genetic tools.

Seed Storage Proteins of Faba Bean ( Vicia faba L): Current Status and Prospects for Genetic Improvement

Faba bean is an important legume crop because of its high‐yield potential and nutrition‐dense grains. There have been significant achievements in faba bean improvement in the last four decades, which led to the doubling of the global yield average. This study reviews the genetic diversity, the breeding methodologies, major achievement on biotic and abiotic traits, and the recent molecular approaches. The high genetic diversity among faba bean accessions has been useful for increasing yield potential of the crop. Substantial increase in yield potential can be gained through the development of cultivars in open pollinated conditions. In the past, many faba bean varieties that are tolerant to abiotic and biotic stresses were released worldwide. The average yield gains varied from 1.65% per year in Syria to 4.17% per year in Ethiopia. The recent advances in molecular technologies will be used to develop more coherent genetic maps, which would also facilitate assembling and ordering genomic scaffolds in a future genome‐sequencing effort and molecular‐breeding approach.

Breeding and genomics status in faba bean (Vicia faba)

Considerable variation was found in the phytate and total phosphorus contents of varieties, selections and genotypes of field beans (Vicia faba L.) The phytate phosphorus content of seeds taken from single plants of the variety Dacre indicated that large variations (1.93-4.03 g kg−1), not significantly correlated with protein content, existed within an established variety. Although some variation in the ratio of phytate to total phosphorus was observed (0.40-0.60), highly significant correlation coefficients were obtained for total and phytate phosphorus contents. The significance of the results obtained is discussed in relation to the potential for improving the nutritive value of field beans by breeding for lower phytate content.

In order to select cowpea genotypes with high food value, 10 varieties were genetically screened in Ngaoundere (Cameroon) for seed crude protein and its soluble fractions contents. Five divergent lines were studied through a 5 x 5 half diallel cross mating. The genotypes presented a significant genetic variability for these parameters (p < 0.05). The globulins constituted the major seed protein fraction, followed by albumins. Diallel analysis demonstrated that, both additive and non-additive gene effects were responsible for the genetic variation of these traits. However, dominance variance was more important than additive variance for all traits. The model of over-dominance was most widespread, suggesting delayed selection to fairly good improvement. All these parameters were found highly inheritable (h 2 = 0.68 to 0.83). The parents differed significantly for their general combining ability (GCA) and the F 1 progenies showed specific combining ability (SCA). Dominant genes have positive effects for high levels of albumins, globulins and prolamins, while high percentage of seed protein and high glutenins content appeared to be associated with recessive genes. In the Guinea savannah zone, these results would help breeders to improve these biochemical traits in terms of initial parent selection and subsequent crossbred selection and breeding procedures. A survey of the protein content of various field bean varieties indicates a range of variation extending over sixteen units of crude protein from 22–38%. Analysis of single plants from within three WPBS varieties Dylan. Danas and Dacre indicates that a similar range exists within commercial varieties. Examination of the progenies of high and low protein single plant selections together with a preliminary estimation of heritability suggest that protein content is highly heritable. No significant correlations were found between protein content and seed yield.
