Heart rate variability as a measure of autonomic regulation of cardiac activity for assessing stress and welfare in farm animals -- a review.
Eberhard von Borell,Jan Langbein,Gérard Després,Sven Hansen,Christine Leterrier,Jeremy N. Marchant-Forde,Ruth M. Marchant-Forde,Michela Minero,Elmar Mohr,Armelle Prunier,D. Valance,Isabelle Veissier +11 more
TL;DR: Data from earlier research demonstrate that HRV is a promising approach for evaluating stress and emotional states in animals, and has the potential to contribute much to the understanding and assessment of the underlying neurophysiological processes of stress responses and different welfare states in farm animals.

Emotions and cognition: a new approach to animal welfare
Alain Boissy,Cécile Arnould,Elodie Chaillou,Lara Désiré,Christine Duvaux-Ponter,Lucile Greiveldinger,Christine Leterrier,Sabine Richard,Sabine Roussel,H. Saint-Dizier,Marie-Christine Meunier-Salaün,D. Valance,Isabelle Veissier +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply appraisal theories to develop an experimental approach for studying the elementary criteria used by farm animals to evaluate their environment and the combinations of those criteria that trigger emotions.

Changes in Heart Rate Variability during a tonic immobility test in quail.
D. Valance,Gérard Després,S. Richard,Paul Constantin,Sandrine Mignon-Grasteau,Samuel Leman,Alain Boissy,Jean-Michel Faure,Christine Leterrier +8 more
TL;DR: The susceptibility to TI cannot be explained only by autonomic reflex changes, and is probably strongly related to the perception of the test by the quail, which reflects behavioural differences in the fear response.

Emotions et cognition : stratégie pour répondre à la question de la sensibilité des animaux
Alain Boissy,Cécile Arnould,Elodie Chaillou,Violaine Colson,Lara Désiré,Christine Duvaux-Ponter,Lucile Greiveldinger,Christine Leterrier,S. Richard,Sabine Roussel,H. Saint-Dizier,Marie-Christine Meunier-Salaün,D. Valance +12 more
TL;DR: L’approfondissement de l’etude des interactions entre emotions et cognition offre donc de nouvelles perspectives de recherche pour mieux comprendre les conditions of bien-etre des animaux en elevage.
