The promise of collecting and utilizing large amounts of data has never been greater in the history of urban water management (UWM). This paper reviews several data-driven approaches which play a key role in bringing forward a sea change. It critically investigates whether data-driven UWM offers a promising foundation for addressing current challenges and supporting fundamental changes in UWM. We discuss the examples of better rain-data management, urban pluvial flood-risk management and forecasting, drinking water and sewer network operation and management, integrated design and management, increasing water productivity, wastewater-based epidemiology and on-site water and wastewater treatment. The accumulated evidence from literature points toward a future UWM that offers significant potential benefits thanks to increased collection and utilization of data. Sweating the assets – The role of instrumentation, control and automation in urban water systems

• Last recent works on real-time flood forecasting in urban drainage systems are reviewed. • A bibliometric and in-depth critical review is conducted. • All points are classified in data collection and preparation, model development and performance assessment. • Real-time data requirements and developed real-time urban flood forecasting models are discussed. There has been a strong tendency in recent decades to develop real-time urban flood prediction models for early warning to the public due to a large number of worldwide urban flood occurrences and their disastrous consequences. While a significant breakthrough has been made so far, there are still some potential knowledge gaps that need further investigation. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art and future trends of real-time modelling of flood forecasting in urban drainage systems. Findings showed that the combination of various real-time sources of rainfall measurement and the inclusion of other real-time data such as soil moisture, wind flow patterns, evaporation, fluvial flow and infiltration should be more investigated in real-time flood forecasting models. Additionally, artificial intelligence is also present in most of the new RTFF models in UDS and consequently further developments of this technique are expected to appear in future works. 

A Critical Review of Real-Time Modelling of Flood Forecasting in Urban Drainage Systems

As a result of climate change, urban areas are increasingly vulnerable to flooding, which can cause devastating effects, both in terms of loss of life and property. Therefore, an accurate assessment of urban flood processes and improved pre-disaster mitigation strategies in threatened areas is essential. Urban flood modeling enables users to understand, assess, and forecast flood conditions as well as their impact. For effective flood modeling, especially in highly urbanized floodplains, model selection based on the contextual requirements is a challenge. This review provides a systematic overview of the application of urban flood modeling approaches from the perspective of urban flood strategy design sequences. In this review, recent research advances are presented as well as suggestions for future research topics that will improve the availability and reliability of urban flood modeling methods. The results of this review will help urban flood managers and potential users balancing model complexity and needs while undertaking effective flood modeling tasks.
