A new paradigm for exchange bias in polycrystalline thin films

Quinolones are synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics with good oral absorption and excellent bioavailability. Due to the chemical functions found on their nucleus (a carboxylic acid function at the 3-position, and in most cases a basic piperazinyl ring (or another N-heterocycle) at the 7-position, and a carbonyl oxygen atom at the 4-position) quinolones bind metal ions forming complexes in which they can act as bidentate, as unidentate and as bridging ligand, respectively. In the polymeric complexes in solid state, multiple modes of coordination are simultaneously possible. In strongly acidic conditions, quinolone molecules possessing a basic side nucleus are protonated and appear as cations in the ionic complexes. Interaction with metal ions has some important consequences for the solubility, pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of quinolones, and is also involved in the mechanism of action of these bactericidal agents. Many metal complexes with equal or enhanced antimicrobial activity compared to the parent quinolones were obtained. New strategies in the design of metal complexes of quinolones have led to compounds with anticancer activity. Analytical applications of complexation with metal ions were oriented toward two main directions: determination of quinolones based on complexation with metal ions or, reversely, determination of metal ions based on complexation with quinolones.

Metal Complexes of Quinolone Antibiotics and Their Applications: An Update

The observation of magnetic domains by magneto-optical microscopy, based on the Kerr and the Faraday effect, is one of the most prominent techniques for the visualization of distributions of magnetization within magnetic materials. The method has gained increased attention due to the possibility to visualize field and current induced phenomena in nanostructured magnetic materials on fast time-scales. Fundamental concepts and recent advances in methodology are discussed in order to provide guidance on the usage of wide-field magneto-optical microscopy in applied magnetism. Recent applications of magneto-optical microscopy in bulk and thin film materials are reviewed at the end.

Progress in magnetic domain observation by advanced magneto-optical microscopy

The coupling between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet can establish a directional anisotropy called exchange bias. In many systems this exchange bias is reduced upon subsequent field cycling, which is referred to as training effects. Numerical simulations of a simple coherent rotation model suggest that the symmetry of the anisotropy in the antiferromagnet is crucial for the understanding of training effects in exchange bias systems. Namely, the existence of multiple antiferromagnetic easy anisotropy axes can initially stabilize a noncollinear arrangement of the antiferromagnetic spins, which relaxes into a collinear arrangement after the first magnetization reversal of the ferromagnet.

Magnetic behaviour of hemin has been investigated by means of magnetostatic methods, AC-susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopy. The measurements were made using polycrystalline and oriented samples of hemin in the temperature range 2.3–292 K and in magnetic fields up to 6 T. In the paramagnetic region, the susceptibility obeys the Curie–Weiss law with positive Curie–Weiss temperature. At low temperature, a rapid increase of the susceptibility is noticed but up to 2 K no long-range correlations are observed. The studies show that the iron ion in hemin exists in two spin states ( S= 5 2 and 1 2 ). The applied magnetic field increases the occupation of the low-spin state. Hemin shows high-field-induced magnetic anisotropy which, similar to the susceptibility, increases with decreasing temperature.
