Knowledge on gene action and trait expression are important for effective breeding. The objective of this study was to determine the general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA), maternal effects and heritability of drought tolerance, yield and yield components of candidate sweetpotato clones. Twelve genotypes selected for their high yield, dry matter content or drought tolerance were crossed using a full diallel mating design. Families were field evaluated at Masoro, Karama and Rubona Research Stations of Rwanda Agriculture Board. Success rate of crosses varied from 1.8 to 62.5% with a mean of 18.8%. Family by site interaction had significant effect (P<0.01) on storage root and vine yields, total biomass and dry matter content of storage roots. The family effects were significant (P< 0.01) for all parameters measured. Broad sense heritability estimates were 0.95, 0.84, 0.68, 0.47, 0.74, 0.75, 0.50 and 0.58 for canopy temperature (CT), canopy wilting (CW), root yield, skin colour, flesh colour, dry matter content, vine yield and total biomass, respectively. The GCA effects of parents and SCA effects of crosses were significant (P<0.01) for CT, CW, storage root, vine and biomass yields, and dry matter content of storage root. The ratio of GCA/SCA effects for CT, CW, yield of storage roots and dry matter content of storage roots were higher than 50%, suggesting the preponderance of additive over non-additive gene action in the expression of these traits. Maternal effects were significant (P<0.05) among families for CT, CW, flesh color and dry matter content, vine yield and total biomass. Across sites, the best five selected families with significant SCA effects for storage root yield were, Nsasagatebo x Otada 24, Otada 24 x Ukerewe, 4-160 x Nsasagatebo, K513261 x 2005-034 and Ukerewe x K513261 with 11.0, 9.7, 9.3, 9.2, 8.6 t/ha, respectively. The selected families are valuable genetic resources for sweetpotato breeding for drought tolerance, yield and yield components in Rwanda or similar environments.

Sweetpotato is a relatively drought tolerant crop providing the highest dry matter content for human consumption. High dry matter content is the main characteristic preferred by consumers and processors of sweetpotato. There is a continued need to develop and release new and high yielding sweetpotato varieties possessing high dry matter content. The objective of this paper is to review important aspects in the breeding of the crop to achieve high storage root yield and increased dry matter content. The paper highlights development and synthesis processes of dry matter of sweetpotato storage root, gene actions and correlation between traits associated with dry matter accumulation, breeding of sweetpotato for high dry matter content, approaches to screening of clones with high dry matter content and effects of genotype by environment interaction on yield and dry matter content.

The research focuses on the effects of temperature on the quality and storage stability of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. [Lam]). It is based on the results of a field experiment conducted between 2015–2017 in Żyznow (49°49′ N, 21°50′ E). The experimental factors were: storage temperatures (5° and 15 °C) and sweet potato cultivars (‘Carmen Rubin’, ‘White Triumph’, ‘Beauregard’, ‘Satsumo Imo’, ‘Purple’). Tubers were harvested at BBCH stage 97. Tubers were stored in a climatic chamber with temperature control and fixed ambient humidity for 6 months during the 2015/16–2017/18 seasons. The storage of tubers at 15 °C helped reduce tuber waste and weight losses resulting from germination, transpiration, respiration and rotting. The quality of the stored tubers depended mostly on storage temperature. It was observed that at 15°, the content of dry matter and total sugars was higher than at 5°, whereas the content of starch was lower. The factor determining storage stability was the genetic features of the cultivars under study. The cultivars ‘Purple’ and ‘Satsumo Imo’ demonstrated good storage stability. The cultivar ‘Carmen Rubin’ turned out least suitable for long storage. The experiment results can contribute to developing storage technology of sweet potato tubers cultivated in Central Europe.

Drought stress is a constraint to sweetpotato ( Ipomoea batatas L (Lam)) production in many parts of Sub- Saharan Africa In this region, crop farming is predominantly rain fed; therefore, breeding for drought tolerance is appropriate for addressing low sweetpotato productivity since the crop is largely produced by resourcelimited farmers As part of developing drought tolerant genotypes in Uganda, this study aimed at determining the nature of genetic control and heritability associated with selected drought adaptation traits Ten randomly chosen clones from each family were evaluated for three traits; tuber yield, crop vigour and canopy cover as well as five traits (leaf senescence, leaf rolling, leaf retention, SPAD readings and root vertical pulling) at 80% field capacity and under no watering conditions for three weeks in a glasshouse Diallel analysis revealed significant effects for both GCA and SCA, indicating both additive and non-additive gene actions were present Baker’s ratio was large in most traits (>050), indicating predominance of additive effects Heritability coefficients were high in most traits (>050), indicating that genetic gains can be achieved by conventional breeding The predominance of additive genetic control realised in this study implies that use of small numbers of parents with suitable GCA effects is most appropriate for drought tolerance improvement in sweetpotato Key Words : Combining ability, diallel, Ipomoea batatas
