It is well known that TCP protocol behaves quiet loosely in mobile wireless environments. In fact, when a mobile host moves from one IP domain to another it has to get a new IP address in the new domain. This process of getting a new IP address should be automatic and fast enough in order to keep active any running TCP session without loosing the quality of service provided to the user. Mobile IP has been developed to manage the user mobility in mobile wireless networks. However, this protocol is not well suited to support a TCP handoffs during the node's handover process which will help in keeping active any running TCP sessions. In this paper, we have designed a new management architecture which will ensure the continuity of any TCP connection when a mobile host executes a handover. In order to validate our architecture, we have evaluated its performance by adopting an analytical model.

programmierbaren Netze zunehmend an Bedeutung. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird basierend auf diesem Prinzip eine neuartige Architektur zur Unterstutzung mobiler Dienste vorgestellt. Sie ermoglicht es, speziell in Netzen mit drahtlosem Zugang, Netzdienste 
kontinuierlich und transparent bereitzustellen. Ferner 
wird ein Verfahren vorgeschlagen, das die Effizienz 
beim Diensttransfer (Handover) erhoht. Fur dessen 
Evaluierung wird eine Modellierung der 
Handovercharakteristik mobiler Teilnehmer entwickelt, 
welche die auftretenden Hystereseeffekte 
berucksichtigt.

Due to the strong drive towards wireless Internet access through mobile terminals, it has become necessary to carefully handle the issues in the wireless environment such as frequent handover/handoff (user mobility), temporary disconnection, burst error and fading. These characteristics of wireless environment deteriorate the performance of wireless systems sharply in terms of TCP throughput as TCP is basically designed for wired networks to provide reliable delivery by using congestion control and error control mechanisms. In mobile IP based network, mobility plays an important role as handover issue makes negative impact on system performance and to enhance the behavior of TCP during handoff, a novel scheme is proposed. Wi-TCP is a new wireless end to end transmission control protocol, designed to support the TCP handoffs in mobile IP based network by utilizing the basic features of Mobile IP, Route Optimized Mobile IP and TCP.

Wi-TCP: A TCP in Wireless Environment

When designing Mobile IP, achieving full transparency for higher layer protocols was one of the main design goals. However, this resulted in several weaknesses, one of them being the decline of TCP's performance in the case of frequent handoffs. Our proposal, handoff-triggered TCP (hot-TCP), enhances TCP's throughput in that case. After a handoff, TCP is notified about the reconnection and may immediately resume data transmission using the previous window size. Since we may not change the remote hosts on the Internet, hot-TCP is used within a split transport connection architecture. We evaluate hot-TCP regarding its performance and fairness in a multiuser environment. The results presented show that a mobile node using hot-TCP does not impact the fair sharing of the wireless link's capacity. Furthermore, we discuss the security requirements for our approach.
