Direct measurements of the ionization potential depression in a dense plasma.
O. Ciricosta,Sam Vinko,Hyun-Kyung Chung,Byoung-ick Cho,C. R. D. Brown,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,K. Engelhorn,Roger Falcone,Roger Falcone,Catherine Graves,Věra Hájková,Andrew Higginbotham,Libor Juha,Jacek Krzywinski,Hae Ja Lee,Marc Messerschmidt,C. D. Murphy,Yuan Ping,D. S. Rackstraw,Andreas Scherz,William F. Schlotter,Sven Toleikis,Joshua J. Turner,L. Vysin,Tianhan Wang,Benny Wu,Ulf Zastrau,Diling Zhu,R. W. Lee,P.A. Heimann,Bob Nagler,Justin Wark +32 more
TL;DR: The results are found to disagree with the predictions of the extensively used Stewart-Pyatt model, but are consistent with the earlier model of Ecker and Kröll, which predicts significantly greater depression of the ionization potential.

Measurements of continuum lowering in solid-density plasmas created from elements and compounds
O. Ciricosta,Sam Vinko,B. Barbrel,D. S. Rackstraw,T. R. Preston,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,B. I. Cho,Hyun-Kyung Chung,Georgi L. Dakovski,K. Engelhorn,Věra Hájková,Philip Heimann,Michael Holmes,Libor Juha,Jacek Krzywinski,Richard W. Lee,Sven Toleikis,Joshua J. Turner,Ulf Zastrau,Ulf Zastrau,Justin Wark +21 more
TL;DR: The standard density-dependent analytical models are shown to be inadequate to describe solid-density plasmas at the temperatures studied, where the reduction of the binding energies for a given species is unaffected by the different plasma environment in either the element or compounds of that species.
Investigation of femtosecond collisional ionization rates in a solid-density aluminium plasma.
Sam Vinko,O. Ciricosta,T. R. Preston,D. S. Rackstraw,C. R. D. Brown,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,B. I. Cho,Hyun-Kyung Chung,K. Engelhorn,Roger Falcone,R. TL;DR: A spectroscopic method to study collision rates in solid-density aluminium plasmas created and diagnosed using the Linac Coherent light Source free-electron X-ray laser, tuned to specific interaction pathways around the absorption edges of ionic charge states is described.
Resonant Kα spectroscopy of solid-density aluminum plasmas.
Byoung-ick Cho,K. Engelhorn,Sam Vinko,Hyun-Kyung Chung,O. Ciricosta,D. S. Rackstraw,Roger Falcone,C. R. D. Brown,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,Catherine Graves,Věra Hájková,Andrew Higginbotham,Libor Juha,Jacek Krzywinski,H. J. Lee,M. Messersmidt,C. D. Murphy,Yuan Ping,Nina Rohringer,A. Scherz,William F. Schlotter,Sven Toleikis,Joshua J. Turner,L. Vysin,Tianhan Wang,Benny Wu,Ulf Zastrau,Diling Zhu,R W Lee,Bob Nagler,Justin Wark,P.A. Heimann +32 more
TL;DR: The resonant generation of Kα emission is reported on, that is to say the production of copious Kα radiation by tuning the x-ray FEL pulse to photon energies below that of the K edge of a solid aluminum sample.
Electron-phonon equilibration in laser-heated gold films
Thomas G. White,Thomas G. White,P. Mabey,Dirk O. Gericke,N. J. Hartley,Hugo Doyle,David McGonegle,D. S. Rackstraw,Andrew Higginbotham,Gianluca Gregori +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the time evolution of the lattice parameter through multilayer Bragg diffraction and compared the result to classical molecular dynamic simulations to determine lattice temperature.
