The properties of water solutions of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) of different concentrations with added salts of the first group alkali metals (chlorides of Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) with the physiological saline concentration of 154 mmol L−1 were studied using electroconductivity, turbidimetry, densitometry, viscometry, dynamic light scattering, dielectric, and luminescence spectroscopy methods. All HPC-water-salt systems were shown to exhibit lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at temperatures between 40 and 50 °C. Adding ions to the HPC-water solutions leads to the decrease in LCST and the appearance of agglomeration of nanoparticles at temperatures above LCST. At low temperatures, when the solutions are solid, the presence of ions in the solution shifts the dielectric relaxation to lower temperatures. This shift negatively correlates with the mass of ions in the solution. The ions are shown to affect several physical properties in both solid and liquid states similarly. Such similarity is attributed to the ability of ions to affect the structure of the hydrate shell and the close surroundings of HPC, as well as to the change of this structure with increasing temperature. The observed effects appear to be macroscopic attributes (markers) of the change in the structure and its kinetic properties due to impurities or thermal motion. 

Impact of the Alkali Metals Ions on the Dielectric Relaxation and Phase Transitions in Water Solutions of the Hydroxypropylcellulose

Abstract Nanocellulose was made in the form of water gel using chemical and ultrasound treatments of the Miscanthus x giganteus plant. Properties both of nanogel and of its thin solid films deposited on glass, silicon and microcrystalline cellulose substrates were studied. Nondestructive methods (XRD, viscosymetry, scanning electron and optical microscopy, reflection and luminescence spectroscopy) were used to characterize studied materials. The results obtained allowed estimation of nanofibrils sizes both in water solutions and in the solid states. It was found that the aspect ratio for the nanofibrils (p = l/d, where l is the length and d – diameter) in the nanogel state decreases from 130 to 20, when temperature increases from 15 to 75 °C. The value of p for nanofibrils in solid films is in the range of 3–30. It was assumed that mentioned data are the result of aggregation of the nanofibrils in the solid state and under water nanocellulose gel cooling. The data about optical properties of the nanocellulose under study showed that optical reflection and photoluminescence methods are suitable, in principle, for characterization of nanocellulose made from Miscanthus x giganteus in the form of nanogel, too.

Physical-chemical properties of nanocellulose synthesized from Miscanthus x Giganteus

Cellulose is one of the oldest electrically insulating materials used in oil-filled high-power transformers and cables. However, reports on the dielectric properties of nanocellulose for electrical insulator applications are scarce. The aim of this study was to characterize the dielectric properties of two nanocellulose types from wood, viz., nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), and algae, viz., Cladophora cellulose, for electrical insulator applications. The cellulose materials were characterized with X-ray diffraction, nitrogen gas and moisture sorption isotherms, helium pycnometry, mechanical testing, and dielectric spectroscopy at various relative humidities. The algae nanocellulose sample was more crystalline and had a lower moisture sorption capacity at low and moderate relative humidities, compared to NFC. On the other hand, it was much more porous, which resulted in lower strength and higher dielectric loss than for NFC. It is concluded that the solid-state properties of nanocellulose may have a substantial impact on the dielectric properties of electrical insulator applications.

Abstract The paper discusses the temperature dependencies of the complex dielectric permittivity obtained at different frequencies for the substituted cellulose derivatives with various concentrations of the hydroxypropoxy group. The substituted cellulose derivatives are shown to undergo a low-temperature dielectric relaxation. The input of the dielectric relaxation into dielectric permittivity decreases when the OH groups in cellulose molecules are substituted by the methoxy groups. In contrast, when OH groups in cellulose molecules are substituted by hydroxypropoxy groups, the dielectric relaxation region shifts to higher temperatures, and its intensity increases. The dielectric spectroscopy method is shown to be a reliable method to estimate the degree of the substitutions of the hydroxyl groups with hydroxypropoxy groups in the cellulose derivatives, used in the pharmaceutical industry as drug carriers and drug delivery rate regulators.

Effects of molecular structure on the dielectric relaxation of substituted cellulose derivatives

We report gravimetric, electric, and spectral properties of the solid-state water-nanocellulose systems with different water content. The systems with the nanocellulose content of 0.15, 0.3, 0.6, 96.6, and 97.3% undergo dielectric relaxation at temperatures between −100 and 0 °C, whose nature differs from that of the dielectric relaxation in pure water. The relaxation process in water-nanocellulose systems was found to be due to the dipole thermal polarization. This process is determined by the behavior of the surface layers of the nanocrystals, surrounded by the hydrated shell; its mechanism is due to the conformational motion of the methylol groups on the surface of the nanocellulose crystals.
