Further laboratory measurements of the beam-plasma discharge (BPD) produced when an energetic electron beam traverses an initially neutral gas are presented. The experimental data indicate that the critical beam current Ic at energy V, magnetic field B, and system length L required for ignition obeys the empirical relationship Ic ∝ V3/2/B0.7 PL at pressures P < 2 × 10−5 torr. This relationship appears to primarily describe the accumulation of ambient plasma density, collisionally produced by the beam itself, to a critical value where ωpe² ≈ ωce² at which ignition occurs. Additional measurements of the narrow-band cyclotron-related waves (fce < f < 1.4fce) observed at beam currents below BPD threshold do not clearly establish whether this instability is a necessary precursor to the BPD. The relevance of these experiments to past and planned electron beam experiments in space is briefly discussed.

Observations from the SEPAC (Space Experiments with Particle Accelerators) experiment on Spacelab 1 Shuttle mission of waves generated during electron beam emissions are presented. The dependence of the wave intensity on the beam parameters and the Shuttle attitude is outlined, and the shape of the wave spectra are discussed. It is found that the noise in the 0.75- to 10 kHz band has a spectral shape that can be characterized by an f exp -n law, and that the VLF signal level depends on the beam angle to the magnetic field, the strongest emissions being observed for parallel beams. These features are found to be consistent with a drift wave instability.

Experiments on the Beam Plasma Discharge (BPD) using an electron beam traveling along a magnetic field have been carried out in a large volume laboratory vacuum chamber. Two different types of BPD have been observed, and scaling laws for varying neutral gas pressure, axial magnetic field, interaction length and electron flux, deduced. The second type of BPD occurs when the beam current is increased well above the threshold for the first type. The transition from the first type to the second, like the ignition of the first, is distinguished by abrupt changes of luminosity, discharge diameter, and wave emission signature.

Characteristics of two types of beam plasma discharge in a laboratory experiment

Electron beam experiments using rocketborne instrumentation have confirmed earlier observations of fast magnetospheric echoes of artificially injected energetic electrons. A total of 234 echoes have been observed in a pitch angle range from 9 to 110 deg at energies of 1.87 and 3.90 keV. Out of this number, 95 echoes could unambiguously be identified with known accelerator operations at 2-, 4-, or 8-keV energy and highest current levels resulting in the determination of transit times of typically 300 to 400 ms. In most cases, when echoes were present in both energy channels, the higher-energy electrons led the lower-energy ones by 50 to 70 ms. Adiabatic theory applied to these observations yields a reflection height of 3000 to 4000 km. An alternative interpretation is briefly examined, and its relative merit in describing the observations is evaluated. The injection process is discussed in some detail as the strong beam-plasma interaction that occurred near the electron accelerator appears to be instrumental in generating the source of heated electrons required for successful echo detection for both processes.

An experimental and theoretical study of the threshold characteristics of a space simulation beam-plasma discharge with emphasis on density profiles and a density-dependent ignition criterion. The study included various beam-plasma conditions covering beam currents from 8 to 85 mA, beam energies from 0.8 to 2.0 keV, and magnetic fields at 0.9 and 1.5 G. The study included experimental determinations of radial profiles of electron density for each of the selected conditions extending from a low-density, pre-beam-plasma discharge state to a strong beam-plasma discharge condition. The experimental results are shown to agree with detailed model calculations, which consider the beam-plasma discharge to be produced by large-amplitude electron plasma waves resulting from the beam-plasma interaction.
