A mixed finite element formulation of triphasic mechano-electrochemical theory for charged, hydrated biological soft tissues
TL;DR: In this paper, a mixed finite element formulation using the standard Galerkin weighted residual method is presented and the resulting first-order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) with respect to time are solved using the implicit Euler backward scheme.

A mixed finite element formulation of triphasic theory and its application to free swelling problem
D. N. Sun,X. E. Guo,W. M. Lai,Van C. Mow,Weiyong Gu +4 more
- 01 Dec 1998
TL;DR: A free-swelling problem was studied using this finite element method to investigate effects of inhomogeneity of fixed charge density (FCD) on ion concentration, tissue deformation, fluid flow and streaming potential etc.

Streaming potential of human lumbar anulus fibrosus is anisotropic and affected by disc degeneration.
Weiyong Gu,X. G. Mao,Bernard A. Rawlins,James C. Iatridis,Robert J. Foster,D. N. Sun,Mark Weidenbaum,Van C. Mow +7 more
TL;DR: It was found that the static streaming potential of the anulus fibrosus depended on the degenerative grade of the discs and on the specimen orientation in which the fluid flows, which provides an understanding of potentially important signal transduction mechanisms in the disc and of the etiology of intervertebral disc degeneration.
