Visual languages have been developed to help new programmers express algorithms easily. They also help to make experienced programmers more productive by simplifying the organization of a program through the use of visual representations. However, visual languages have not reached their full potential because of several problems including the following: difficulty of producing visual representations for the more abstract computing constructs; the lack of adequate computing power to update the visual representations in response to user actions; the immaturity of the subfield of visual programming and need for additional breakthroughs and standardization of existing mechanisms. Visualization of Vision Algorithms (VIVA) is a proposed visual language for image processing. Its main purpose is to serve as an effective teaching tool for students of image processing. Its design also takes account of several secondary goals, including the completion of a software platform for research in human/image interaction, the creation of a vehicle for studying algorithms and architectures for parallel image processing, and the establishment of a presentation medium for image-processing algorithms.

The data flow model is a popular model on which to base a visual programming language. This paper describes alternatives available to a designer of data flow languages, describes many of the languages, discusses some strengths of the languages, and discusses some unsolved problems in the design of data flow languages.

A computer system having a Visual Development Environment (VDE) is described. The Visual Development Environment includes an interface having a Component Inspector, Component Manager, Component Library, and one or more visual editors. In operation, a user constructs a program by selecting one or more components from the Library, which displays components in a tabbed palette. Using a visual editor of the system, the user may drill-down into the internals of a component, for modifying its logic. Once the functionality of a component is completed, the user may proceed to connect together various components via the component "ports", which allow access to properties of the component. Components of the system may be nested within other components to an arbitrary level.

System and methods for visual programming based on a high-level hierarchical data flow model

A system for creation and completion of goal oriented electronic forms creates a graphical image data file which defines: a graphical image of a form for display and printing; a graphical image of tree branches, tree nodes, and conclusions in association with fields of the form; reading and writing links between form fields and data sources and destinations; and links to other forms which, with the original form, comprise a related stack of forms. The system includes a form creation mode and a run time mode. The trees are defined by an application developer using the form creation mode to establish both qualitative and quantitative relationships between the various fields on the forms thereby providing the basis for the goal oriented prompting for the application user using the run time mode.

Graphical programming system and methods for assisting a user with creating screen objects on a screen device

A graphics editor generates an Appearance Construction Graph (ACG) which represents an image formation process as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The ACG image transformation operations (transforms), and outputs (viewable images--sinks) which can be displayed, for example, in a window of a display screen, and manipulated to construct and edit complex images. Accordingly, the displayed ACG is a user interface that permits complex graphics images to be constructed in a straightforward manner, and thus easily understood and manipulated (edited) by an operator. The nodes in the ACG are selectively interconnected by links (edges). The complex image represented by the ACG can be constructed and displayed in a viewer window on the display screen by "running" the ACG. The graphics editor "runs" the ACG by performing operations on the image fragments as defined by the interconnected nodes of the ACG. When the ACG is "run", each output (or viewer) node displays its image in a viewer window which is automatically created.

The Interface Construction Set (InterCONS) is a visual language and environment. It consists of a data-flow language, an editor for building and testing data-flow programs and making presentation views of the programs, libraries for holding completed programs, and a presentation system for interacting with finished programs and sequences of programs. The author describes the data-flow language and its primitives for arithmetic, logic, interactive control, path control, visual output, and program control. The execution model is also described. InterCONS is useful for experimenting with interactive controls and building models of interactive applications. >
