Quasifree 5He + 3He → α + α reaction process in the 9Be(3He, αα)4He reaction at E(3He) = 4.0 MeV

Two-proton scattering at sub-Coulomb energies has been measured indirectly via the Trojan horse method applied to the p + d{yields}p + p + n reaction to investigate off-energy shell effects for scattering processes. The three-body experiment was performed at 5 and 4.7 MeV corresponding to a p-p relative energy ranging from 80 to 670 keV. The free p-p cross section exhibits a deep minimum right within this relative energy region due to Coulomb plus nuclear destructive interference. No minimum occurs instead in the Trojan horse p-p cross section, which was extracted by employing a simple plane-wave impulse approximation. A detailed formalism was developed to build up the expression of the theoretical half-off-shell p-p cross section. Its behavior agrees with the Trojan horse data and in turn formally fits the n-n, n-p, and nuclear p-p cross sections given the fact that in its expression the Coulomb amplitude is negligible with respect to the nuclear one. These results confirm the Trojan horse suppression of the Coulomb amplitude for scattering due to the off-shell character of the process.

Off-energy-shell p-p scattering at sub-Coulomb energies via the Trojan horse method

We have reanalyzed previous data on the /sup 6/Li( p,pd) quasifree scattering at 590 MeV incident energy, from which the authors deduce a momentum distribution of the clusters ..cap alpha.. and d in /sup 6/Li with a full width at half maximum around 120 MeV/c. We find instead that the experimental results are compatible with a momentum distribution whose full width at half maximum is about 70 MeV/c, which is in agreement with other experimental findings and with the prediction of the cluster model.

In the framework of the experimental campaign of the ($ p,\alpha$) and ($ n,\alpha$) reactions cross sections measurement involving the 10, 11B isotopes, different ($ n,\alpha$) cross section measurements have been performed at ultra-low energy. In this work, the 10B(n,$ \alpha$)7Li reaction was investigated through the Trojan Horse Method, by means of the Quasi-Free (QF) 2H(10B,$ \alpha^{7}$Li)1H reaction at 30 MeV of beam energy. As in the standard THM approach, the measurement has been performed in inverse kinematics using a 10B beam. The excitation function of the 10B(n,$ \alpha$)7Li reaction has been measured at a center-of-mass energy between 0 and 700 keV. The data were compared with the existing experimental ones. Even if the energy resolution of the present experiment did not allow a separation between the channels ($ n,\alpha_0$) and ($ n,\alpha_1$) the low energy cross section and the angular distribution are presented, pointing out once more the ability of the method in studying neutron induced reactions using deuteron as source of virtual neutrons.

0n ly recently quasi-free reactions (QFR) have become, in addit ion to quasi-free scattering (QFS) processes, a s tandard tool of investigation of the cluster structure (~-s). These reactions have been performed mostly on light nuclei, where the possible two-cluster configuration seems to be more likely to occur and the high Q-value of the process ensures high momenta, at least in the exit channel. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the quasi-free reaction fV(0, 1 2)S. The target nucleus N is assumed as decomposed, in the lower vertex, in the clusters SqT, where S is considered spectator of the vir tual reaction T(0, 1)2. The analysis of QFR data, as well as for QFS, is usually performed in the framework of the impulse approximation, both in plane-wave (PWIA) and distorted-wave (DWI~) treatment . I t is well known that the models based on the impulse approximation are inadeguate, at least quanti tat ively, to give a correct description of QFR at low energies. I[owever, since even DWIA is unable to take into account the absorption of the incoming and outgoing waves and in general the dynamics of the process, in most cases PWI_~ has been used, due to its simplicity, to understand quali tat ively the results of these reactions.

Publisher Summary This chapter explores proton induced deuteron break-up at E P = 12.5 MeV. The chapter presents a comparison of the data with the exact three-body calculations and presents information on the relation between the exact three-body calculation and the simple theoretical approximations: the Watson–Migdal model (WMM) for the final state interaction (FSI) and the plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) for the quasi-free scattering (QFS). The analysis is done using Ebenhoh code (EC), which solves the three particle Faddeev equations exactly for separable, S-wave, spin dependent N-N interactions. The N–N potential is of the Yamaguchi form. The figures presented in the chapter show some typical examples of the comparison of the EC calculations and the data on np FSI, pp QFS, and pn QFS, respectively. No normalization factor has been applied to the calculated values. In most of the other cases, the EC calculations also agree with the measured cross sections, both in shape and absolute magnitude. The chapter also presents the results of the analysis of the data for E P =12.5 MeV.
