The specification discloses a method and apparatus for setting and varying margins, line spacing and printing direction of a data printing machine by a machine user before and during printing by use of a keyboard with push-button control which is coupled to a digital controller to input information about the actual and the desired location of a print head relative to a printing surface, in response to which the controller outputs signals which control relative motion of the print head and indexes its relative position, from the actual to the desired direction and location.

In a wire matrix printer control system, some characters from a finite alphabet are locally stored as compressed dot matrix objects reflectively symmetric about at least one axis. Upon being referenced and ascertained as a compressed object, the bits are applied to the printhead in column major order up to the axis of symmetry and then applied in reverse column major order. For uncompressed objects, the bits are applied only in column major order.

An electronic control circuit is designed for use with a high speed printer having a character generator which is coupled to a print head. The print head is laterally displaced along a print line by a stepper motor and forms characters from a plurality of columns of dots as the print head moves. The electronic control circuit includes an encoder which is coupled to the shaft of the stepper motor to generate count up pulses when the stepper motor displaces the print head in a first direction and count down pulses when the stepper motor displaces the print head in a second direction. The count up and count down pulses permit the control circuit to continuously define the present print head position. A random access memory receives printable characters during a load cycle and reads out printable characters to the character generator during a print cycle. A data formatting control is provided to format input data, to load the memory with the formatted data, to compute a desired print head position during each load cycle and to initiate the print mode at the end of each load mode. An up/down counter receives the count up and count down pulses and converts them into digital address signals for the memory and for the character generator to cause the print head to print selected characters at selected positions along the print line in response to displacements of the stepper motor. A motor control is provided to controllably accelerate and decelerate the print head during each print cycle.

Through-put of a printer is increased by optimizing the print head's movement between print lines. Optimization is performed on a time basis rather than a distance basis. A determination is made as to whether it is quicker to position the print head at the left or right end position of the next print line. The calculations account for current print head position, the relative end positions of the next print line, the length of the next print line, current print head speed, the various acceleration and deceleration times and the turn-around settling time for the print head.

An ink jet printer which includes data storage and which prints with multiple jets in an interlace fashion on paper supported on a rotating drum is provided with a bidirectional ink jet transport for moving axially along the drum. A gating arrangement is provided for gating the stored data to printing controls for the multiple jets in a first order upon the transport moving in a first axial direction and for gating the stored data to the printing controls in a second order upon the transport moving in the opposite axial direction.

A serial printer having a print element capable of printing in both directions across a print form, means for pre-analyzing a succeeding line of print on the form following a preceding line of print to determine the end positions of the succeeding line of print, and means for causing the print element to move from the last position printed on the preceding line of print to the closer end position of the succeeding line of print so that printing of the succeeding line of print may take place beginning from said closer end print position of the succeeding line of print. One embodiment includes hardware for causing the printing element to so move to the closer end print position of the succeeding print line, and another embodiment utilizes a general purpose computer so programmed that this movement of the print element can take place. Means is also provided for causing the print element to move at a faster speed than printing speed if the print element traverses more than five spaces in reaching the closer end print position of the succeeding print line or if a print line includes more than five consecutive blank spaces.
