Saturation of the molecular nitrogen second positive laser transition

A review of recent developments in high-pressure pulsed molecular lasers is presented. Included are some experimental results on TEA lasers, E-beam lasers, and lasers using Blumlein excitation. Discussions of the kinetic modeling, the parametric behavior, and the characteristics of uniform discharges in the high-pressure pulsed CO 2 laser are given. Recent results on pulse-initiated chemical lasers, extremely high-pressure lasers, and high-repetition-rate TEA lasers are also discussed. Efforts to control and use the output from these devices are described, and an extensive list of references is given.

High-pressure pulsed molecular lasers

The design and construction of high‐power nitrogen 3371 A laser is described in detail. The laser produces 13 mJ at 3371 A in a 12 nsec FWHM pulse at a repetition rate of 5 pulses per second. Various models of the laser have yielded 108 pulses with very infrequent component failure. When a second mirror is added, strong laser action is observed in the N2 first positive system; the total resultant ir output energy is about 3 mJ in a 50 nsec FWHM pulse.
