Effects of moisture and temperature on the tensile strength of composite materials

Analysis of curing stresses in resin matrix composite laminates involves a temperature range over which variation of elastic moduli is appreciable. A method based on total stress-strain-temperature relations is formulated and applied to determine the curing stresses in boron/epoxy composite laminates. This method is shown to be preferable to the incremental method because the former requires the thermal strains and the stress-strain relations only at the final temperature of interest. The use of incremental constitutive equations is also discussed, and it is shown that proper care must be exercised to insure inclusion of interaction terms that have no counterparts in linear theories.

Curing Stresses in Composite Laminates

This paper demonstrates that it is possible to calculate the complete set of elastic mechanical properties for graphite-epoxy fiber-reinforced materials at any fiber-volume fraction by modifying equations previously developed to include transversely isotropic graphite-fiber properties. Experimental verification of the modified equations is demonstrated by using these equations to curve fit elastic-property data obtained ultrasonically over a range of fiber-volume fractions. Material systems under consideration are T300/5208, AS-3501 and Modomor II/LY558 graphite epoxy. Using the modified equations it is possible to extrapolate for fiber properties. From Modomor II/LY558 ultrasonic data, it is shown that five out of seven extrapolated graphite-fiber properties are consistent with the assumption that graphite fibers are transversely isotropic. Elastic properties for T300/5208 and AS-3501 are ultrasonically evaluated by propagating stress waves through six individual specimens but at various angles from a block of unidirectional material. Particular attention is devoted to specimen dimensions. To demonstrate the need for accurately calculating or experimentally measuring all lamina elastic properties, a brief discussion is included on the effect that variations in lamina elastic properties have on calculating interlaminar stresses.

Elastic moduli of transversely isotropic graphite fibers and their composites

: This report reviews the state of knowledge of the basic factors that control the durability of epoxies in service environments. The structure-property relations of amine (diethylene triamine, DETA)-cured bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and amine (diaminodiphenyl sulfone, DDS)-cured tetraglycidyl 4,4'diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) epoxies, the effects of sorbed moisture, and the fabrication and environmental factors that control the durability of epoxies are reviewed. The modes of deformation and failure of these materials, which occur primarily by crazing, are controlled by their network structure and microvoid characteristics. The pertinent, basic, physical phenonema induced and/or modified by sorbed moisture that affect the durability of epoxies are reviewed. These include the plasticization, swelling stresses, and modification of the crazing process in epoxies caused by sorbed moisture together with the diffusion characteristics of moisture in these materials. The durability of epoxies in service environments are discussed in terms of the structure-property relations of epoxies, the effect of fabrication and environmental factors and their complex interactions on the formation of permanent damage regions. The Durability of Epoxies.

The buckling moduli of Thornel 300/Fiberite 1034 graphite epoxy composites were measured at temperatures ranging from 105 K to 422 K and at moisture contents ranging from 0% (dry) to 1.5% (fully saturated). The measurements were made using 0°, 90° and π/4 laminates. A survey was also made of the existing data showing the effects of temperature and moisture content on the tensile modulus and the compressive modulus of different composite materials.

Environmental Effects on the Elastic Moduli of Composite Materials

The program generated basic data on the effect of various environmental variables on the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of selected resin matrix and metal matrix materials. The three resin matrix materials systems were Boron/Avco 5505, Modmor II Graphite/Narmco 5206 and Courtaulds HMS Graphite/Hercules 3002M systems. The two metal matrix materials systems were 6061 Aluminum/Boron and 6Al-4V - Titanium/BorSic Composites. The resin matrix systems were procured in the form of prepreg tapes and specimens were fabricated at IITRI materials laboratory. The metal matrix composites were fabricated by vendors in laminate form and supplied to IITRI for specimen fabrication and testing. The environments included steady state and cyclic thermal, thermo-humidity, and humidity conditioning.
