II – The Amino Acid Fortification of Cereals

Seventy-six samples of barley embracing 14 varieties grown under various conditions of nitrogen fertilisation in different locations in the U.K. were examined for nitrogen content and 14 samples were analysed for their total content of amino acids other than tryptophan.



Top dressing with nitrogenous fertilisers during growth resulted in the production of grain with a higher nitrogen content as well as an increased overall yield of nitrogen/hectare. The growth locality had a greater effect upon the nitrogen content of the harvested seed than did the application of nitrogen to the growing crop.



Lysine content was inversely proportional to crude protein content for barleys containing between 8 and 11% crude protein and, in consequence, within this range the yield of lysine/ton of grain was of the same order.

Sulfur and Crop Quality

The relationship between nutrition of the host tree, Abies amabilis (Dougl.) Forbes, as influenced by nitrogen fertilizers, and the growth of populations of the balsam woolly aphid, Adelges piceae (Ratz.), was investigated. Sixty trees, growing in a greenhouse in two soil types, a nutrient-deficient mineral soil and an enriched humic soil, were infested with woolly aphid larvae. Subsequently, groups of 10 trees received foliar treatments of various concentrations of ammonium nitrate and urea. The following year, 32 young trees in Seymour Valley, B.C., were studied to determine the effect of fertilization of uninfested trees on establishment of aphid larvae.In the greenhouse, foliar sprays of 1% ammonium nitrate solution resulted in a 23% decrease in population in 10 weeks, as contrasted with a 31% increase in the control population. In the field, larval establishment was 31% to 37% lower on the ammonium nitrate-treated trees than on the control trees. Inasmuch as there was no evidence of increased mortality of aphids in situ, we infer that the fertilizer acts primarily by inhibiting initial settling of larvae on the host trees.

Samples of barley having low, medium, and high protein contents were obtained from field fertilizer experiments conducted during 1957 and 1958. The nutritive values of these grains were compared in a feeding trial employing rats as the test animal, and by a semi-quantitative chromatographic estimation of 13 amino acids in the grains. For the feeding experiment all diets were supplemented with minerals and vitamins. Each grain sample was fed with and without added lysine. Animal growth and food efficiency improved with increase in protein levels and with addition of lysine. The 13 amino acids determined accounted for approximately two-thirds and four-fifths of the total protein in the 1957 and 1958 grains respectively. Possible causes of these differences are discussed.
