A review on recent technological advancement in the activated carbon production from oil palm wastes

In this study, the utilization of TCL as raw material in production of carbon supercapacitor electrodes are focused on variations in carbonization temperature. Carbonization temperatures were varied by 500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C marked with the code TCL500, TCL600, TCL700 and TCL800 corresponding to the selection of carbonization temperature. All samples were activated using CO2 gas at 850 °C for 2 hours and 30 minutes. The density of the resulting carbon electrode was 0.776 gcm−3, 0.754 gcm−3, 0.738 gcm−3 and 0.762 gcm−3 for electrodes TCL500, TCL600, TCL700 and TCL800, respectively. The crystalline nature of the resulting carbon sample was found to be amorphous with 2θ 23.880°, 44.192° scattering angle, and stacking high (Lc) 8.482 Å for TCL700 samples. Lc data has been used to obtain a sample surface area and it was found as high as 1160.497 m2g−1. The morphology of the electrode surface has been tested using a SEM instrument. The elements content of the electrode have also been analyzed based on the EDS data. The optimum specific capacitance of carbon electrodes from TCL is obtained at a carbonization temperature of 700 °C as high as 54 Fg−1.

Microwave-assisted pyrolysis for carbon catalyst, nanomaterials and biofuel production

A single step and simple pyrolysis technique is used to prepare carbon nanospheres (CNSs) from natural biowaste sago hampas in a nitrogen atmosphere without any catalyst. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images along with transmission electron microscope (TEM) images show evidence of high quality CNSs with a good particle size uniformity. Both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman data show the presence of graphitic characteristic peaks of CNSs. Zeta-potential study reveals that the obtained CNSs can be well dispersed in solution making them suitable for cell imaging applications. The use of biowaste sago hampas is very important from the viewpoint of sustainable synthesis of functional CNSs for the future.

Production of Activated Carbon Electrodes from Sago Waste and its application for an Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitor

In this feasibility study a novel prospective electrode material for electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) has been investigated. This promising material is activated carbon (AC) film produced using sago waste as a precursor. Important parameters of the technological process are the KOH to charcoal ratio and the content of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder. The influence of these parameters on the microtexture and pore structure and on the electrochemical characteristics of the AC films has been studied in detail. The measured specific surface area (SSA) of the samples is in the range from 212 to 1498 m 2 /g. It has been found that the presence of micropores increases the specific capacity while the presence of the mesopores acts in the opposite direction, because these mesopores are too wide in diameter for aqueous electrolyte. The specific capacitance of the studied samples has been found to be in the range from 16 to 64 F/g.
