Cantharidin, another natural toxin that inhibits the activity of serine/threonine protein phosphatases types 1 and 2A

The need to capture wild animals for conservation, research, and management is well justified, but long-term effects of capture and handling remain unclear. We analyzed standard types of data collected from 127 grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) captured 239 times in western Alberta, Canada, 1999‐2005, and 213 American black bears (U. americanus) captured 363 times in southwestern North Carolina, 1981‐2002, to determine if we could detect long-term effects of capture and handling, that is, effects persisting� 1 month. We measured blood serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), and myoglobin to assess muscle injury in association with different methods of capture. Serum concentrations of AST and CK were above normal in a higher proportion of captures by leghold snare (64% of 119 grizzly bear captures and 66% of 165 black bear captures) than capture by helicopter darting (18% of 87 grizzly bear captures) or by barrel trap (14% of 7 grizzly bear captures and 29% of 7 black bear captures). Extreme AST values (.5 times upper reference limit) in 7 (6%) grizzly bears and 29 (18%) black bears captured by leghold snare were consistent with the occurrence of exertional (capture) myopathy. We calculated daily movement rates for 91 radiocollared grizzly bears and 128 radiocollared black bears to determine if our activities affected their mobility during a 100-day period after capture. In both species, movement rates decreased below mean normal rate immediately after capture (grizzly bears: X¼ 57% of normal, 95% confidence interval¼ 45‐74%; black bears: 77%, 64‐88%) and then returned to normal in 3‐6 weeks (grizzly bears: 28 days, 20‐37 days; black bears: 36 days, 19‐53 days). We examined the effect of repeated captures on age-related changes in body condition of 127 grizzly bears and 207 black bears and found in both species that age-specific body condition of bears captured� 2 times (42 grizzly bears and 98 black bears) tended to be poorer than that of bears captured once only (85 grizzly bears and 109 black bears), with the magnitude of effect directly proportional to number of times captured and the effect more evident with age. Importantly, the condition of bears did not affect their probability of capture or recapture. These findings challenge persons engaged in wildlife capture to examine their capture procedures and research results carefully. Significant capture-related effects may go undetected, providing a false sense of the welfare of released animals. Further, failure to recognize and account for long-term effects of capture and handling on research results can potentially lead to erroneous interpretations.

Chapter 6 – Integumentary System

Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium and M. intracellulare are ubiquitous organisms in the environment. The reservoir of M. avium subsp. avium is generally accepted to be environmental, in particular, water and soil are sources of the organism. In contrast to M. avium infection in wild and domestic birds, M. avium infection in mammals occurs only sporadically and is rarely transmissible. Generalised disease is usually uncommon, owing to the non-progressive, chronic character of the infection. However, some cases of disseminated disease have been reported, e.g. in captive non-domestic hoofed animals as well as in immunosuppressed dogs and cats. The majority of M. avium and M. intracellulare infections in livestock are detected at slaughter and the diagnosis is confirmed by bacteriological procedures. Condemnation of affected portions of the carcass can result in significant economic losses, although gross lesions are mostly restricted to lymph nodes close to the alimentary tract. Successful treatment with antibiotics in combination with surgery has been reported in some affected domestic cats, but is not considered to be effective or economical in other species. In the past, differentiation of M. avium bacteria from the closely related M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis was based on the mycobactin dependence and prolonged incubation period of the latter. More recently, amplification of the genomic insertion sequence IS900 has proved to be a powerful tool for identification of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. The potential zoonotic importance of M. avium infections has been indicated, but requires clarification.

A urethral defect, presumed to communicate with the corpus spongiosum penis, caused hematuria in seven geldings and hemospermia in three stallions. Hematuria in geldings occurred at the end of urination. Hematuria was not observed in stallions with hemospermia. A linear urethral defect was identified, by endoscopic examination, on the convex surface the urethra at the level of the ischial arch of each horse. Cause of the defect was not determined. Two stallions were successfully treated for hemospermia, one by temporary subischial urethrostomy combined with sexual rest for 10 weeks, and the other by sexual rest alone for 6 months. The third stallion had hemospermia 6 weeks after urethrostomy. The geldings were successfully treated for hematuria, six by temporary subischial urethrostomy, and one by a subischial incision that extended into the corpus spongiosum penis but did not enter the lumen of the urethra. Efficacy of subischial urethrostomy for treatment of hemospermia was difficult to assess because of the small number of surgically treated stallions. In geldings, surgery eliminated hematuria, presumably by reducing vascular pressure in the corpus spongiosum penis during urination, thus allowing the urethral defect to heal.

Three adult horses underwent aggressive treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, using course-fractionated cobalt 60 radiotherapy. Squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is not commonly diagnosed in horses. Historically, horses with this type of neoplasm have not been treated or have undergone some form of surgery. The prognosis for long-term survival or cure has been poor. Long-term results of cobalt 60 radiotherapy were good to excellent and exceeded those usually reported for horses treated surgically. On the basis of these results, use of radiotherapy for these neoplasms is recommended.

Macroscopic haematuria of horses

Splenic and hepatic ultrasonography were beneficial for diagnosis of lymphosarcoma in 3 horses with anorexia, weight loss, and lethargy. Ultrasonographic abnormalities of the spleen included a large, complex, hypoechoic mass in 1 horse, multiple well-marginated, hypoechoic nodules in 1 horse, and diffuse hyperechogenicity in another horse. Ultrasonographic abnormalities of the liver included a spherical, hypoechoic nodule in 1 horse and diffuse hyperechogenicity in another. Histologic examination of ultrasound-guided biopsy specimens or aspirates revealed lymphosarcoma. Necropsy findings confirmed diagnosis of lymphosarcoma in all horses. Necropsy findings of the liver and spleen correlated well with antemortem ultrasonographic images.
