Nitrogen ion implantation and in vitro corrosion behavior of as-cast Ti–6Al–7Nb alloy

Surface characterization of passive film formed on nitrogen ion implanted Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–6Al–7Nb alloys using SIMS

TiN coatings were deposited by reactive sputtering on Armco iron, AISI 430 and AISI 304 substrates. The electrochemical behaviour of the samples was investigated using d.c. and a.c. electrochemical techniques in H 2 SO 4 and NaCl solutions. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the microstructure of the TiN coating in cross-section. The electrochemical tests show that the corrosion resistance of these materials is linked to the presence of different defects (pinholes, pores, etc.). An attempt was made to improve the corrosion resistance, first by modifying the sputtering conditions and secondly by the pre-sputtering of a pure titanium underlayer. The effects of these different methods are discussed.

Corrosion of sputtered titanium nitride films deposited on iron and stainless steel

This work presents data on the properties of the surface layer of OT-4-0 titanium alloy after nitrogen-ion implantation. Polished samples were implanted with nitrogen doses of 1×1016, 1×1017, 6×1017 and 1×1018 N+ cm−2. The corrosion resistance was examined by the electrochemical methods in 0.9% NaCl at a temperature of 37 °C. Structural examinations were made with a transmission electron microscope. Depth profiles of nitrogen were investigated by secondary-ion mass spectrometry. The phase composition of the implanted layers and the residual stresses induced in them during the implantation were examined by the X-ray diffraction method using a Dosophatex system. It was found that the increase of the corrosion resistance depends on the nitrogen dose employed; the maximum improvement of the corrosion resistance was observed with a dose of 1×1017 N+ cm−2.
