Attractive elevated-temperature properties and low density make the titanium aluminides very interesting for both engine and airframe applications, particularly in the aerospace industry. The challenge to the materials scientist is to maintain these characteristics while building-in “forgiveness”. The basic phase diagram and crystal structure of both the Ti3Al and TiAl phases are reviewed, followed by a consideration of chemistry-processing-microstructure-deformation/fracture-mechanical property relationships in monolithic material. Conventional and innovative synthesis methods are presented, including use of hydrogen as a temporary alloying element. Composite concepts as a method to enhance not only “forgiveness” but also elevated-temperature behaviour are discussed. Environmental effects are evaluated prior to consideration of present and projected applications of both monolithic and composite material. It is concluded that while the titanium aluminides in monolithic form can be used now in non-demanding applications, much further research and development is required before this material class can be used in critical applications, especially in composite concepts.

Synthesis, properties and applications of titanium aluminides

Beta titanium alloys were recognized as a distinct materials class in the 1950s, and following the introduction of Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al in the early 1960s, intensive research occurred for decades thereafter. By the 1980s, dozens of compositions had been explored and sufficient work had been accomplished to warrant the first major conference in 1983. Metallurgists of the time recognized beta alloys as highly versatile and capable of remarkable property development at much lower component weights than steels, coupled with excellent corrosion resistance. Although alloys such as Ti-15V-3Al-3Sn-3Cr, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al and Ti-3AI-8V-6Cr-4Mo-4Zr (Beta C) were commercialized into well-known airframe systems by the 1980s, Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al was largely discarded following extensive employment on the SR-71 Blackbird. The 1990s saw the implementation of specialty beta alloys such as Beta 21S and Alloy C, in large part for their chemical and oxidation resistance. It was also predicted that by the 1990s, cost would be the major limitation on expansion into new applications. This turned out to be true and is part of the reason for some stagnation in commercialization of new such compositions over the past two decades, despite a good understanding of the relationships among chemistry, processing, and performance and some very attractive offerings. Since then, only a single additional metastable beta alloy, Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr-0.5Fe, has been commercialized in aerospace, although low volumes of other chemistries have found a place in the biomedical implant market. This article examines the evolution of this important class of materials and the current status in airframe applications. It speculates on challenges for expanding their use.

Thermohydrogen processing is a technique in which hydrogen is used as a temporary alloying element in titanium alloys to control the microstructure and improve the final mechanical properties. Thermohydrogen processing can also be used to enhance the processability/fabricability of titanium products including sintering, compaction, machining, and hot working (forging, rolling, superplastic forming, etc.). In the case of near net shapes, such as castings and powder metallurgy products, thermohydrogen processing is the only method available for significant microstructural modifications and consequent enhancement in mechanical properties. Hydrogen as a temporary alloying element in titanium alloys: thermohydrogen processing

Microstructures, phases, and phase transformations in Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimens containing 0, 10, 20, and 30 at. pct hydrogen were investigated using optical microscopy (OM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microhardness testing. Alloying with hydrogen was achieved by holding the specimens in a pure hydrogen atmosphere of different pressures at 780 °C for 24 hours. The phases present in the temperature range of 20 °C to 1000 °C were determined by microstructural characterization of the specimens quenched from different temperatures. Increasing the hydrogen addition from 0 to 30 at. pct lowered the beta-transus temperature of the alloy from 1005 °C to 815 °C, significantly slowed down the kinetics of the beta-to-alpha transformation, and led to formation of an orthorhombic martensite instead of the hexagonal martensite found in quenched specimens containing 0 pct H. A hydride phase was detected in specimens containing 20 and 30 at. pct hydrogen. The time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams for beta-phase decomposition were determined at different hydrogen concentrations. The nose temperature for the beginning of the transformation decreased from 725 °C to 580 °C, and the nose time increased from 12 seconds to 42 minutes when the hydrogen concentration was increased from 0 to 30 at. pct.
