Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Helium atom scattering spectroscopy of surface phonons: genesis and achievements

The interaction potential for the elastic diffractive scattering of low‐energy He atoms from the highly corrugated LiF(001) crystal surface is derived from semi ab initio pair potentials in the framework of the recently developed Tang–Toennies potential model [J. Chem. Phys. 80, 3726 (1984)]. In addition to the sum of all He atom‐crystal ion two‐body potentials the induced dipole potential caused by the electric field of the ion lattice is taken into account, leaving only one free parameter, the C6 dispersion constant of the He–F− interaction. By simple adjustment of this parameter, it is possible to fit all of the experimental bound states of the atom‐surface potential well, to within experimental error. Diffraction probabilities calculated by the close coupling method with this potential are shown to be in good agreement with the available experimental results. Pairwise additive semi ab initio potential for the elastic scattering of He atoms from the LiF(001) crystal surface

We present a method for calculating elastic and inelastic scattering probabilities for light particles, such as helium and molecular hydrogen, scattering from surfaces with which they weakly interact. The method is a unitary one-phonon approximation in which the scattering probabilities are calculated from thermally averaged amplitudes which are generated numerically. The thermal averaging procedure is more general than this application and could be applied to other systems with weak inelastic scattering. We also discuss an approximation for the gas-surface interaction potential that can greatly simplify calculations where it is applicable. Finally we present some preliminary results using this method to study rotationally mediated selective adsorption resonances in HD scattering from copper.

Inelastic gas-surface scattering. I. Formalism.

Over the last decade, numerical solutions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) using the technique of lattice QCD have developed to a point where they are beginning to connect fundamental aspects of nuclear physics to the underlying degrees of freedom of the Standard Model. In this review, the progress of lattice QCD studies of nuclear matrix elements of electroweak currents and beyond-Standard-Model operators is summarized, and connections with effective field theories and nuclear models are outlined. 
Lattice QCD calculations of nuclear matrix elements can provide guidance for low-energy nuclear reactions in astrophysics, dark matter direct detection experiments, and experimental searches for violations of the symmetries of the Standard Model, including searches for additional CP violation in the hadronic and leptonic sectors, baryon-number violation, and lepton-number or flavor violation. Similarly, important inputs to neutrino experiments seeking to determine the neutrino-mass hierarchy and oscillation parameters, as well as other electroweak and beyond-Standard-Model processes can be determined. The phenomenological implications of existing studies of electroweak and beyond-Standard-Model matrix elements in light nuclear systems are discussed, and future prospects for the field toward precision studies of these matrix elements are outlined.

Nuclear matrix elements from lattice QCD for electroweak and beyond-Standard-Model processes

These lectures describe the application of the quantum theory of scattering to atom-surface interaction processes. The treatment will be introductory, self-contained and fairly inclusive. A complete list of references is not given, however; these can be found in recent reviews [1–6].

Theory of Atom-Surface Scattering

Phonon-assisted resonances with surface bound states are shown to give important effects in time-of-flight spectra of He scattered from a LiF (100) surface. The comparison with theory indicates that inelastic resonances produce sharp distortions in the response of the surface phonon spectrum. At low temperature, theory predicts that resonances can locally amplify the phonon response by an order of magnitude.

Resonance-enhanced atom scattering from surface phonons

We report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry A_{γ}^{np} in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A_{γ}^{np} isolates the ΔI=1, ^{3}S_{1}→^{3}P_{1} component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured A_{γ}^{np}=[-3.0±1.4(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-8}, which implies a DDH weak πNN coupling of h_{π}^{1}=[2.6±1.2(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-7} and a pionless EFT constant of C^{^{3}S_{1}→^{3}P_{1}}/C_{0}=[-7.4±3.5(stat)±0.5(syst)]×10^{-11}  MeV^{-1}. We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and implications of the result.
