The smart metering and communication methods used in smart grid are being extensively studied owing to widespread applications of smart grid. Although the monitoring and control processes are widely used in industrial systems, the energy management requirements at both service supplier and consumer side for individuals promoted the evolution of smart grid. In this paper, it is aimed to disclose in a clear and clean way that what smart grid is and what kind of communication methods are used. All components of a smart grid are introduced in a logical way to facilitate the understanding, and communication methods are presented regarding to their improvements, advantages, and lacking feature. The developing generation, transmission, distribution and customer appliances are surveyed in terms of smart grid integration. The communication technologies are introduced as wireline and wireless classification where the key features are also tabulated. The security requirements of hardware and software in a smart grid are presented according to their cyber and physical structures.

A survey on smart metering and smart grid communication

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in power systems intensifies the need of enhancing the flexibility in grid operations in order to accommodate the uncertain power output of the leading RES such as wind and solar generation. Utilities have been recently showing increasing interest in developing Demand Response (DR) programs in order to match generation and demand in a more efficient way. Incentive- and price-based DR programs aim at enabling the demand side in order to achieve a range of operational and economic advantages, towards developing a more sustainable power system structure. The contribution of the presented study is twofold. First, a complete and up-to-date overview of DR enabling technologies, programs and consumer response types is presented. Furthermore, the benefits and the drivers that have motivated the adoption of DR programs, as well as the barriers that may hinder their further development, are thoroughly discussed. Second, the international DR status quo is identified by extensively reviewing existing programs in different regions.

An overview of Demand Response: Key-elements and international experience

A Systems and Control Perspective of CPS Security

Smart grid has emerged as the next generation of power grid, due to its reliability, flexibility, and efficiency. However, smart grid faces some critical security challenges such as the message injection attack and the replay attack. If these challenges cannot be properly addressed, an adversary can maliciously launch the injected or replayed message attacks to degrade the performance of smart grid. To cope with these challenging issues, in this paper, we propose an efficient authentication scheme that employs the Merkle hash tree technique to secure smart gird communication. Specifically, the proposed authentication scheme considers the smart meters with computation-constrained resources and puts the minimum computation overhead on them. Detailed security analysis indicates its security strength, namely, resilience to the replay attack, the message injection attack, the message analysis attack, and the message modification attack. In addition, extensive performance evaluation demonstrates its efficiency in terms of computation complexity and communication overhead.

An Efficient Merkle-Tree-Based Authentication Scheme for Smart Grid

Smart homes will be a key component of smart grids which can make significant contributions to Europe's transition to a low-carbon energy system. A growing literature on smart meters and demand side programmes focuses on the energy consumption and management services that smart homes offer. However, they can deliver much broader types of services, including assisted living, health and security. By including these non-energy aspects, this paper reveals differences in perceptions of smart homes in a cross-country comparative context to inform the delivery of smart home services. Public perceptions on the role of utilities and government in particular are important factors to be taken into account. The research highlights that policies should leave all paths open due to due to differences in householder preferences and acceptance of smart homes. Further implications for service delivery and planning are highlighted, calling for more interdisciplinary research in this area.

A comparison of consumer perceptions towards smart homes in the UK, Germany and Italy: reflections for policy and future research

In this article, we have attempted to highlight the network architectural considerations and communication technology options within the context of their infusion into SDGs so as to achieve the desired system-level objectives outlined in the various published strategic plans and road maps. A critical consideration in the development of smarter electrical grids is to ensure best security practices. Few terms in the smart grid vocabulary, however, are as overworked and overloaded (i.e., assigned multiple definitions) as the word security. Such definitions range all the way from ensuring reliability "keeping the lights on" to protecting the confidentiality of customer information. This article will attempt to explore these multiple definitions and find some common thread that can help ensure the success of the pursuit of a smarter electrical grid while maintaining security-in all of its various meanings.
