The Bactrocera dorsalis complex of tropical fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae) contains 75 described species, largely endemic to Southeast Asia. Within the complex are a small number of polyphagous pests of international significance, including B. dorsalis sensu stricto, B. papayae, B. carambolae, and B. philippinensis. Most species within the complex were described in 1994 and since then substantial research has been undertaken in developing morphological and molecular diagnostic techniques for their recognition. Such techniques can now resolve most taxa adequately. Genetic evidence suggests that the complex has evolved in only the last few million years, and development of a phylogeny of the group is considered a high priority to provide a framework for future evolutionary and ecological studies. As model systems, mating studies on B. dorsalis s.s. and B. cacuminata have substantially advanced our understanding of insect use of plant-derived chemicals for mating, but such studies have not been applied to help resolve the limits of biological species within the complex. Although they are commonly regarded as major pests, there is little published evidence documenting economic losses caused by flies of the B. dorsalis complex. Quantification of economic losses caused by B. dorsalis complex species is urgently needed to prioritize research for quarantine and management. Although they have been documented as invaders, relatively little work has been done on the invasion biology of the complex and this is an area warranting further work.

Invasive phytophagous pests arising through a recent tropical evolutionary radiation: the Bactrocera dorsalis complex of fruit flies.

Many fruit flies in the genus Bactrocera (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacini) are economically important insects. However, little attention has been given to the molecular phylogenetic relationship among Bactrocera subgenera. We explored the phylogenetic relationship among the 8 subgenera Afrodacus, Austrodacus, Bactrocera, Daculus, Gymnodacus, Paratridacus, Tetradacus, and Zeugodacus based on the sequences of 2 mitochondrial DNA fragments with a combined length of 1034 base pairs. The 2 mtDNA fragments are a 689-bp segment of the COI gene and a 345-bp segment of the 16S rDNA gene. Thirty-five individuals representing 7 Bactrocera species found in the Chongqing region in China were sequenced for both fragments, and sequences of the same gene regions were acquired from GenBank for another 20 Bactrocera species and 2 other tephritid species, Anastrepha ludens and Ceratitis capitata, which were used as out-groups for the phylogenetic analyses. Several factors which may influence the responsiveness of male D. opiliae Drew & Hardy (Diptera: Tephritidae) to the lure methyl eugenol, were studied in the laboratory. Males did not respond immediately after emergence and the time course of the development of responsiveness was correlated with the attainment of reproductive maturity, as indicated by readiness to mate. Once developed, responsiveness was maintained to at least 3 months of age. The development of full responsiveness depended on access to protein-aceous food, but continuous access was not necessary. Males displayed a daily cycle of responsiveness which was inversely related to the cycle of mating behaviour. Ingestion of methyl eugenol appeared to reduce subsequent responsiveness, but continuous long exposure to the odour, without ingestion, did not.

Divers facteurs susceptibles d'influencer les reponses a l'attractif sexuel methyl-eugenol des mâles de Dacus opiliae Drew & Hardy (Diptera: Tephritidae) ont ete etudies au laboratoire. Aucune reponse n'est enregistree chez les mâles au cours des 3 premiers jours qui suivent l'emergence (25°, 75% HR). L'intensite des reponses augmente ensuite progressivement jusqu'a atteindre un maximum le 8e jour. Cette progression suit un cours parallele au developpement sexuel mesure par l'aptitude des mâles a s'accoupler. Une fois acquise, la sensibilite au methyl-eugenol se maintient pendant au moins trois mois. L'intensite maximale des reponses n'est atteinte que si une alimentation proteinique — meme intermittente — est fournie. L'intensite des reponses au methyl-eugenol ne varie guere entre 8 et 18 h; elle est plus faible au crepuscule (19 h), seul moment ou les mâles de D. opiliae sont sexuellement actifs. Le cycle quotidien des reponses a l'attractif correspond donc a l'inverse de celui de l'activite sexuelle. L'ingestion de methyl-eugenol semble diminuer les reponses, mais une exposition continue a l'odeur sans ingestion d'attractif ne les change pas.
