Modern navies are exploring ways to power all-electric ships (AES), enabling ships' loads to be powered from the same electrical source as that of the propulsion system, thus avoiding a separate generation system for these loads. AES are envisioned to be equipped with a variety of high power electronic components, pulsed loads like electromagnetic guns and electromagnetic aircraft launchers, machines and cables made of high temperature superconductors that improve efficiency, and highly intelligent controls for adaptability and reconfiguration. This paper presents a review of present state-of-the-art in the field of AES covering all the technological aspects.

All-electric ships—A review of the present state of the art

The aviation industry has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the major rise in electric power system technology for the past several decades. With more electric aircraft now the industry standard, the new future vision is toward all-electric aircraft, wherein conventional power systems and propulsion sources are electrified. This paper compares and analyzes the Electric Power Systems (EPS) of all-electric vehicles, all-electric ships and more electric aircraft to help predict future development of all-electric aircraft EPS. It is concluded that gravimetric energy density, weight, cost of current battery, and propulsion systems for aircraft are the main limitations preventing the transition to all-electric aircraft. Furthermore, lithium-air batteries show promise for closing the energy density gap between gasoline and batteries. Finally, some recent advancements in small-scale all-electric aircraft development illustrate the bright future of all-electric aircraft.

A Comparison of Electric Vehicle Power Systems to Predict Architectures, Voltage Levels, Power Requirements, and Load Characteristics of the Future All-Electric Aircraft

Over the last two decades there has been an increased use of three-phase AC power systems that may not be connected to the main power grid, such as the power systems on more-electric airplane and all-electric ships. Power-electronic converters are usually a significant part of these systems, which provide excellent performance. But their negative incremental impedance nature increases the possibility of system instability. A small-signal analysis that uses interface impedances defined in the synchronous frame is developed by Belkhayat at Purdue in the mid-90s to access the system stability. The system impedance varies with the operating point. Thus the impedance has to be obtained online at the desired operating point, on even in situ. Literature investigates its use with system models, but the lack of equipment to measure such impedance prevents its use in practical systems. Measurement of impedances of each component enables the prediction of system stability before building the real system. The impedance data can also be used to investigate the instability in the system after it is built. The capability of impedance measurement can save the cost and time of system integrators. After reviewing the state-of-the-art development of impedance measurement systems, the dissertation analyzes several systematical error sources in the system, which includes the signal processing and sampling circuits, the phase estimation for coordinate transformation and the injection device connection, and proposes the solution to reduce their influence. Improved algorithm and system architecture are proposed to increase the measurement speed and accuracy. Chirp signal is used as an excitation signal to extract impedances at a group of frequencies at one time. The use of both shunt current injection and series voltage injection improves the SNR of measured signal. Oversampling, cross-correlation and frequency domain averaging technique are used to further reduce the influence of noise.

Online Measurement of Three-phase AC Power System Impedance in Synchronous Coordinates

This paper discusses the design, modelling and analysis of a DC power system for shipboard applications. A 24 pulse controlled rectifier converts the generator output to 1,000 VDC through a 12 phase transformer. This paper derives a model of the system and presents time domain simulations. Stability analysis is accomplished by applying the Nyquist Criterion.

Design, modelling and stability analysis of an integrated shipboard DC power system

A recent trend in designing naval ships is to improve performance through using more electric equipment. The reliability and quality of the onboard electric power, therefore, becomes critical as the ship functionality would entirely depend on its availability. This paper investigates the possibility of using Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS), similar to those earlier developed for commercial applications, to address issues related to onboard power supplies. A design of a FESS for onboard power backup and railroad electrical stations is presented. The FESSs power output parameters are 500kW×30sec in high-duty mode and up to 2MW in pulse mode. High power output is one of the main advantages of FESS over commercially available electrochemical batteries. The other advantages include essentially an unlimited number of charge/discharge cycles, observable state of charge and environmental friendliness. Designs of the main FESS components are discussed: low-loss magnetic bearings, an energy-storage hub, a high-efficiency motor/generator and power electronics.

Future ship power systems require improved methods to achieve the objectives of flexible/reconfigurable power delivery, robust fault management and improved power quality for loads. A DC integrated fight through power (IFTP) system achieves this increased survivability goal through the use of in-line power conversion, where all of the ship service power is delivered to the zonal loads through staged power conversion. A new AC IFTP system is proposed in this paper, which results from the application of the industrial power-conditioning approach to shipboard power systems. The system architecture is presented and survivability modes are analyzed. Two power conditioning devices are vital to the effective operation of the AC IFTP and these are discussed and simulated in detail. After preliminary analysis, the power conditioning centric AC IFTP system promises reduced size and weight as the converter ratings are reduced. Further analysis is required to quantify these tradeoffs between survivability and weight for the AC IFTP system so that actual weight loss can be identified.
