The increasing interest in smart home technologies has created a need for a comprehensive literature survey. This article reviews the goals of a smart home energy management system, along with related definitions, applications, and information about the manufacturing of its components. The challenges associated with smart home energy management systems and possible solutions are examined, and the energy factors that contribute to a customer's electricity bill are discussed. A number of price schemes and the load models needed for solving related scheduling optimization problems are also presented, including a review of the literature related to energy management system scheduling with respect to its control, automation, and communication.

Smart Home Activities: A Literature Review

Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSAN) integrated with computer intelligence have recently been proposed for a large range of applications for energy management systems. This paper presents an original smart platform for Home Energy Management System, which embeds computer intelligence for optimization of the power consumption of controllable appliances based on retail pricing schemes, knowledge representation by classification rules of different appliances and decision trees based on their consumption behavior, without disturbing the living comfort of the home owners. Our platform provides easy access to selected displays of switching status and consumption of all appliances, as well as remote overview of the information in tabular and graph form data and power consumption control via smart phones and remote terminal computer. As an additional benefit, the system detects supply voltages out of the allowed limits and protects controllable appliances by switching off the supply.

Wireless smart platform for Home Energy Management System

In USA, 2002, approximately 3.2 million intersection-related crashes occurred, corresponding to 50 percent of all reported crashes. In Japan, more than 58 percent of all traffic crashes occur at intersections. With the advances in Intelligent Transportation Systems, such as off-the-shelf and in-vehicle sensor technology, wireless communication and ubiquitous computing research, safety of intersection environments can be improved. This research aims to investigate an integration of intelligent software agents and ubiquitous data stream mining, for a novel context-aware framework that is able to: (1) monitor an intersection to learn for patterns of collisions and factors leading to a collision; (2) learn to recognize potential hazards in intersections from information communicated by road infrastructures, approaching and passing vehicles, and external entities; (3) warn particular threatened vehicles that are approaching the intersection by communicating directly to the in-vehicle system.

Context-Aware Ubiquitous Data Mining Based Agent Model for Intersection Safety

The continuous evolvement of the smart grid might startle the consumer with different choices for Home Energy Management Systems (HEMSs). The assessment analyses of different HEMSs don't provide a solution or an incentive for further research, because the unified quality evaluation system does not exist. In this paper we propose a reference model design for an user-centric Quality Control System (QCS) for smart HEMS. The system quality attribute is appraised by the Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). The proposed QCS is evaluated on a real-time test bed of a set of different types of power appliances. The results showed the improvements of 10% of energy savings, 18% reduction in the electricity bill, while the consumer quality of life was not affected. The stability of our QCS, the balance between the QoS and QoE, provides a user engaged model for a sustainable quality control for responsible, environmental and cost-efficient HEMS.

User-Centric Quality Control System for Smart Home Energy Management

This paper presents new multi-criterion mining algorithm, which as a module of the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) can identify the operating states of a combination of controllable appliances There is a close interaction between HEMS and this algorithm The new incoming samples, collected by HEMS, are associated with appropriate cluster using the mining algorithm This information is submitted back to HEMS which appropriately controls the appliances by switching them on/off The strength of our mining algorithm is the combined usage of geometrical and statistical approach to the data clustering The criteria that embody the geometrical approach include: identification of corresponding min-max parallelepipeds, embodying the new instance by the neighboring parallelepipeds and minimum distance criterion Box-dimension with its definition as a measure of self-similarity is used as a statistical approach criterion As a result from the testing of these criteria, we have achieved time optimization and improved accuracy, due to reducing of the number of potential clusters (reducing the number of testing instances but not excluding them for further analysis) without reducing the dimensionality of the clustering problem The successful identification of the operating states of the appliances, done with our continuously learning algorithm, enables HEMS to improve energy efficiency and cost savings
