A software analysis system for capturing tags generated by tag statements in instrumented source code. The software analysis system includes a probe that monitors the address and data bus of the target system. When a tag statement is executed in the target system, a tag is written to a predetermined location in the address space of the target system. The tag contains a tag value that is indicative of the location in the source code of the tag statement generating the tag. By monitoring the predetermined address, the probe is able to capture tags as they are written on the data bus of the target system. By properly instrumenting the source code, the software analysis system is able to perform a variety of analysis functions in essentially real time, including code coverage, function and task execution times, memory allocation, call pairs, and program tracing.

Method and apparatus for analyzing software executed in embedded systems

We describe the Monitoring and Checking (MaC) framework which provides assurance on the correctness of an execution of a real-time system at runtime. Monitoring is performed based on a formal specification of system requirements. MaC bridges the gap between formal specification, which analyzes designs rather than implementations, and testing, which validates implementations but lacks formality. An important aspect of the framework is a clear separation between implementation-dependent description of monitored objects and high-level requirements specification. Another salient feature is automatic instrumentation of executable code. The paper presents an overview of the framework, languages to express monitoring scripts and requirements, and a prototype implementation of MaC targeted at systems implemented in Java.

A method and system for simulating the execution of a software program on a simulated hardware system. An instrumented software program is divided into program segments delineated by tags and is then analyzed for data describing the program segments. The data is tabulated and indexed in a function data table according to the program segments. Hardware parameters that at least define a portion of the simulated hardware system are tabulated in a hardware configuration file. The software program is executed on a host system, and when a tag is executed, data indexed in the function data table under the program segment corresponding to the executed tag and hardware parameters tabulated in the hardware configuration file are used to calculate an estimated execution time for the program segment corresponding to the executed tag. The estimated execution time for the program segment is added to a running total for the overall execution time of the software program. The system includes a memory for storing software parameters describing program segments of the software program, and for storing hardware parameters that at least partially define the simulated hardware system. The system further includes a processor for calculating an estimated execution time for the software program using the software and hardware parameters.

Performance assertion checking is an approach to automating the testing of performance properties of complex systems. System designers write assertions that capture expectations for performance; these assertions are checked automatically against monitoring data to detect potential performance bugs. Automatically checking expectations allows a designer to test a wide range of performance properties as a system evolves: data that meets expectations can be discarded automatically, focusing attention on data indicating potential problems.PSpec is a language for writing performance as sertions together with tools for testing assertions and estimating values for constants in assertions. The language is small and efficiently checkable, yet capable of expressing a wide variety of performance properties. Initial experience indicates that PSpec is a useful tool for performance testing and debugging; it helped uncover several performance bugs in the runtime system of a parallel programming language.

Performance assertion checking

One way to guarantee that software behaves securely is to monitor programs at run time and check that they dynamically adhere to constraints specified by a security policy. Whenever a program monitor detects that untrusted software is attempting to execute a dangerous action, it takes remedial steps to ensure that only safe code actually gets executed. This thesis considers the space of policies enforceable by monitoring the run-time behaviors of programs and develops a practical language for specifying monitors' policies. 
In order to delineate the space of policies that monitors can enforce, we first have to define exactly what it means for a monitor to enforce a policy. We therefore begin by building a formal framework for analyzing policy enforcement; we precisely define policies, monitors, and enforcement. Having this framework allows us to consider the enforcement powers of program monitors and prove that they enforce an interesting set of policies that we define and call the infinite renewal properties. We show how, when given any reasonable infinite renewal property, to construct a program monitor that provably enforces that policy. 
In practice, the security policies enforced by program monitors grow more complex both as the monitored software is given new capabilities and as policies are refined in response to attacks and user feedback. We propose dealing with policy complexity by organizing policies in such a way as to make them composeable, so that complex policies can be specified more simply as compositions of smaller spicily modules. We present a fully implemented language and system called Polymer that allows security engineers to specify and enforce composeable policies on Java applications. We also formalize the central workings of Polymer by defining an unambiguous semantics for our language.

Program monitoring and measuring is the activity of collecting information about the execution characteristics of a program. Although this activity is occasionally supported by special-purpose hardware, it is normally done by adding instrumentation code to the program so that it collects interesting data as it runs. Unfortunately, this alteration is itself a difficult task involving all the complexities of programming. Given some questions to be answered, the programmer must determine what data must be collected, determine where in the program those data can be collected, and add code to the program to collect that data and to process it to produce the desired results. The goal of the work described is to automate the process. A high-level program monitoring and measuring system is presented. The system provides a high-level specification language to let programmers specify what they want to know about their program's execution.
