Genome-wide association studies establish that human intelligence is highly heritable and polygenic
Gail Davies,Albert Tenesa,Albert Tenesa,Antony Payton,Jian Yang,Sarah E. Harris,D. C. Liewald,Xiayi Ke,S. Le Hellard,Andrea Christoforou,Michelle Luciano,Kevin A. McGhee,Lorna M. Lopez,Alan J. Gow,Janie Corley,Paul Redmond,Helen C. Fox,Paul Haggarty,Lawrence J. Whalley,Geraldine McNeill,Michael E. Goddard,Thomas Espeseth,Astri J. Lundervold,Ivar Reinvang,Andrew Pickles,Vidar M. Steen,Vidar M. Steen,William E R Ollier,David J. Porteous,Michael A. Horan,John M. Starr,Neil Pendleton,Peter M. Visscher,Peter M. Visscher,Ian J. Deary +34 more
TL;DR: A genome-wide analysis of unrelated adults with data on single nucleotide polymorphisms and detailed phenotypes on cognitive traits unequivocally confirms that a substantial proportion of individual differences in human intelligence is due to genetic variation, and is consistent with many genes of small effects underlying the additive genetic influences on intelligence.
Molecular genetic evidence for overlap between general cognitive ability and risk for schizophrenia: A report from the Cognitive Genomics consorTium (COGENT)
Todd Lencz,Emma Knowles,Gail Davies,Saurav Guha,D. C. Liewald,John M. Starr,Srdjan Djurovic,Ingrid Melle,Kjetil Sundet,Andrea Christoforou,Ivar Reinvang,Semanti Mukherjee,Pamela DeRosse,Astri J. Glahn,Anil K. Malhotra +45 more
TL;DR: Results provide molecular confirmation of the genetic overlap between SCZ and general cognitive ability, and may provide additional insight into pathophysiology of the disorder.
Brain cortical characteristics of lifetime cognitive ageing
Simon R. Cox,Mark E. Bastin,Stuart J. Ritchie,David Alexander Dickie,D. C. Liewald,Susana Muñoz Maniega,Paul Redmond,Natalie A. Royle,Alison Pattie,Maria del C. Valdés Hernández,Janie Corley,Benjamin S. Aribisala,Benjamin S. Aribisala,Andrew M. McIntosh,Joanna M. Wardlaw,Ian J. Deary +15 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that associations between regional cortical volume and cognitive ageing differences are predominantly driven by surface area rather than thickness among healthy older adults.
GWAS-based pathway analysis differentiates between fluid and crystallized intelligence
Andrea Christoforou,Andrea Christoforou,Thomas Espeseth,Thomas Espeseth,Gary Davies,Gary Davies,Carla P. D. Fernandes,Carla P. D. Fernandes,Sudheer Giddaluru,Sudheer Giddaluru,Manuel Mattheisen,Manuel Mattheisen,Albert Tenesa,Albert Tenesa,Sarah E. Harris,Sarah E. Harris,D. C. Liewald,Antony Payton,William Ollier,Michael A. Steen,Ian J. Deary,S. Le Hellard,S. Le Hellard +35 more
TL;DR: The gF–gC distinction at the genetic level is supported and functional annotations and pathways worthy of further investigation are identified and identified.
Improving Phenotypic Prediction by Combining Genetic and Epigenetic Associations
Sonia Shah,Marc Jan Bonder,Riccardo E. Marioni,Zhihong Zhu,Allan F. McRae,Alexandra Zhernakova,Sarah E. Harris,D. C. Liewald,Anjali K. Henders,Michael M. Mendelson,Chunyu Liu,Roby Joehanes,Liming Liang,Daniel Levy,Nicholas G. Martin,John M. Starr,Cisca Wijmenga,Naomi R. Wray,Jian Yang,Grant W. Montgomery,Lude Franke,Ian J. Deary,Peter M. Visscher +22 more
TL;DR: The differential effects of the BMI methylation profiles by age support previous observations of age modulation of genetic contributions and suggest that combining genetic and epigenetic information might have greater utility for complex-trait prediction.
