System of informal justice is a reality in all countries of the world - especially in developing countries. In Bangladesh as there is no formal administrative justice system at the village level, shalsih (informal justice system) plays vital role in providing justice to the people - especially to the poor. Village elite is treated as the judge or justice provider to the people. The main problem is that they over exercise and misuse their power to do this. Almost in all cases they provide biased justice. Therefore, BRAC as a National NGO strives to motivate poor to organize themselves through forming Federation to protest in one sense and make sure the equal justice to all the villagers in other sense. The findings show that Federation is getting lot of successes towards achieving their goal although they face lot of challenges in their way now and then and in future as well.

Shalish and the Role of Brac's Federation: Improving the Poor's Access to Justice

It is pretty foolish not to expect any changes in society. In dynamic, all the dimensions of society undergo substantial changes over time. The determiner of these changes is plentiful from the time itself to every sing aspect of human behavior along with the societal, political, economic, and natural components that influence the change. Through this inevitable process, the rural power structure, which was traditional and tribal, has gone through many transitional periods and has now started to take a new shape. By using a qualitative technique and studying an Upazila in Bangladesh, this study can suggest that the rural power structure, which is predominantly autonomic, has lost its self-reliance due to financial dependence on the central government. In addition, the growth of partisan politics in rural societies has created a situation in which it is nearly impossible to differentiate between local and national policies. This is a consequence of the problem created by the rise of partisan politics because partisan politics in rural societies have intensified since their inception. Clientelist politics has taken a firm shape in every allocation of values in an agrarian society. Political and judicial institutions like the Shalish and Gram Samaj have almost disappeared or transformed upside-down. Growing disbelief of the residents, dysfunctional institutions, and politically backed rural leaders have failed to win the faith of the majority of the society, clearly indicating a decaying rustic power structure.

Decaying Rural Power Structure in Bangladesh: An Observation on the Political Institutions of Sherpur Upazila

This chapter analyzes the features, trends, and issues related to governmental systems, conflicts and coercion, competition and imposition, and so on in the Muslim majority countries (MMCs). The chapter looks at the styles of governments in the MMCs, and shows how the ‘patrimonial’ authoritarian governments in the MMCs promote ‘clientelism’ resulting in ‘syncretic’ politics of coercion and conflicts. It suggests that many MMCs by virtue of their authoritarian (semiauthoritarian or semidemocratic) government style suffer from conflicts between landed aristocracy and rising industrialists, patron–client politics, ‘executive dominance’; and a symbiotic relationship between the military, bureaucracy, and the business elites. The chapter concludes that these factors resulting from external influences and relationships and the built-in institutional difficulties shape power relationships and governance pattern in the MMCs to hamper human development and need to be dealt with diligently for improvements in human development.

Power Configuration in the Muslim World: Exploring the Post-WWII Era

Considering the widespread concern on political participation and voting rights in Bangladesh, many think the local organizations, civil societies, and NGOs cannot contribute expectedly in favor of mass peoples' needs for over a decade. On the other hand, many explain political context as state policies, elections, political systems, and government perspectives. Given these contexts, we are using the term political space in this article as an analytical method to explore the role of civil societies and local level organizations and institutions in responding to problems that arise due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Using the ethnographic methodology, we have provided empirical data supporting the dynamics of locally-led initiatives to respond coronavirus epidemic. The study explores the political space that institutional and informal civil society can create locally and play a role in the welfare of its citizens even when a country or a society is subject to strict control over certain political conventions and activities.

This article shows how people in one part of Bangladesh rendered landless and impoverished by river bank erosion make innovative use of kinship and other ideologies legitimating reciprocity and mutual aid to re‐establish themselves rent‐free on the land of others. It thereby addresses a larger empirical issue: where are the fully landless rural poor in South Asia living, and through what means? Theoretically, it extends Dreze and Sen's analysis of entitlements and poverty to instances of inter‐household cooperative conflict and mutual aid among extremely poor people. A culturally informed, gender disaggregated analysis of those locally called uthuli because they have settled on others’ land without monetary payment demonstrates that women's ‘extended entitlements’ [Dreze and Sen, 1989:10] as daughters, sisters and mothers are often critical assets in establishing residence.
