A study has been made of the production of hyperfragments by the interactions of 800-MeV/c K- mesons in nuclear emulsion. The frequency of production, estimated to be 5.3±0.3%, is about the same as for K- mesons at rest. The hyperfragments are emitted predominantly in the forward direction and the ratio of nonmesonic to mesonic decays has been found to be 11.5±0.6, much greater than for K- mesons at rest. Production of hyperfragments from the interactions of 800-MeV/c K- mesons with emulsion nuclei

In this study of hyperfragment production by K--meson absorptions at rest in emulsion nuclei, an attempt has been made to estimate the contribution of heavy spallation hyperfragments to the total observed number. In a sample of 24 640 K--meson captures, 1612 secondary events have been attributed to the production and subsequent decay of hyperfragments. From a study of the characteristics of both the production and decay disintegrations, it is concluded that about one half of the observed hyperfragments consists of λ0-hyperons trapped in the heavy spallation products of silver and bromine and these are almost entirely confined to the (0/3) μm range interval. The consequences of their presence aie discussed.

The production of heavy hyperfragments by K--meson captures at rest in emulsion nuclei

Presented in this report are lifetime estimates for hypernuclei $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{3}$, $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{4}$, and $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{5}$ based upon data obtained from an emulsion stack exposed to 2.3- and 2.5-BeV/c ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ mesons. These lifetimes are: $\ensuremath{\tau}(_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{3})=({{0.9}_{\ensuremath{-}0.4}}^{+2.2})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$ sec (3 in-flight and one at-rest decays; $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{3}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{He}}^{3}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$); $\ensuremath{\tau}(_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{4})=({{1.8}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}}^{+2.5})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$ sec (3 in-flight and 4 at-rest decays; $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{H}^{4}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{He}}^{4}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$); $\ensuremath{\tau}(_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{He}^{5})=({{1.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5}}^{+1.9})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$ sec (3 in-flight and 25 at-rest decays; $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{He}^{5}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{He}}^{4}+p+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$). Also one decay in flight and nine decays at rest of $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{He}^{4}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{He}}^{3}+p+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ were observed in a total estimated time of 1.50\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$ sec. Included in the observation times for $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{He}^{4}$ and $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{He}^{5}$ are contributions from nine ambiguous decays at rest of $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{He}^{4.5}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{He}}^{3.4}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$.

Lifetimes of Hypernuclei, H3Λ, H4Λ, H5Λ

A study is made of 2191 interactions of K−-mesons at rest in a mixture of Cr3Br and propane. From the estimated numbers of hyperons emitted, it is found that (21.3±1.8)% of the stars give rise to Λ-hyperons that remain trapped within nuclear matter. This result confirms previous work requiring the probability of trapping to be considerably greater than that inferred solely from the frequency of the production of hyperfragments observable in nuclear emulsion.

A bubble chamber study of the trapping of Λ-hyperons in nuclear matter

The production features of the short range (R≤10 μm) hyperfragments produced from the interactions of 800, 1500 and 3500 MeV/c K--mesons in emulsions are studied. The results are compared with the range and mass distributions obtained from a Monte Carlo calculation. It is observed that while the observed and calculated range spectra agree well for the hyperfragments of range > 3 μm, an observational loss of about 50% is predicted for those of range < 3 μm. A large variation in the masses of such hyperfragments,vis. A ~ 25/95, is predicted.

The analysis of pi --mesonic decays is used to determine the binding energies of the LAMBDA hyperons in /sup LAMBDA /H/sup 3/, /sub LAMBDA /H/sup 4/ , /sub LAMBDA /He/sup 4/, /sub LAMBDA /He/sup 5/, /sub LAMBDA /He/sup 7/, / sub LAMBDA /Li/sup 7/, /sub lambda /Li/sup 8/, /sub LAMBDA /Li/sup 9/, /sub LAMBDA /Be/sup 8/, /sub LAMBDA /Be/sup 9/, B/sup 11/ , /sub LAMBDA /B/sup 12/, and /sub LAMBDA /C/sup 13/.
