Basic characteristics of the liquid-glass transition are reviewed, emphasizing its universality and briefly summarizing the most popular phenomenological models. Discussion is focused on a number of alternative models which one way or the other connect the fast and slow degrees of freedom of viscous liquids. It is shown that all these ``elastic'' models are equivalent in the simplest approximation.

A review of lithium and non-lithium based solid state batteries

A new kind of scaling analysis for the conductivity spectra of glasses without any arbitrary parameters is presented. By applying this method to sodium borate glasses of different compositions, we find strong indications for the existence of a universal ionic relaxation process as well as for a strong electrolyte behavior. Our results enable us to show that the often used electric modulus formalism is misleading when relaxation mechanisms on a microscopic level are concerned. A more meaningful discussion can be based on the log-log dependence of the conductivity on frequency.

Carrier concentrations and relaxation spectroscopy : new information from scaling properties of conductivity spectra in ionically conducting glasses

The discovery of fast ion transport in solids has in recent years stimulated much interest in the scientific community both with regard to obtaining improved understanding of the phenomenon and applying such materials in advanced battery systems. More recently the phenomenon of fast ion transport has also been observed to occur in increasing numbers of amorphous systems. In this paper we review recent transport data obtained in over 100 glasses which appear to exhibit exceptionally high Ag, Li, Na and F ion conductivities at temperatures far from the melting points. We also include results recently obtained in our laboratory for glasses in the lithium borate system. Common characteristics of these glasses are summarized and are compared with predictions of classical diffusion theory. Relatively low and composition-independent values of σ0 indicate poor agreement with a simple isolated-ion diffusion model, while composition-dependent activation energies are related to structural changes. Some glasses share similar properties with their crystalline counterparts while others do not. This is discussed in terms of the relative disorder already existing within the crystals. The need for improved characterization of glasses is also discussed.

Fast ion transport in oxide glasses

Ionic conductivities have been investigated for lanthanoid silicates of the Ln10(SiO4)6O3 solid solution series and related compounds. The activation energy and conductivity at 500 °C were estimated to be 69 kJ mol–1 and 1.8 × 10–4 S cm–1 for La10(SiO4)6O3 and 71 kJ mol–1 and 1.5 × 10–4 S cm–1 for Nd10(SiO4)6O3. The a and c lattice constants of the hexagonal phase decreased with decreasing radius of the Ln3+ ion for Ln10(SiO4)6O3(Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy). The activation energy increased and the conductivity decreased when Ln3+ ions with smaller ionic radii were used. The sole carrier in these materials is the O2– ion.

Ionic conductivity of lanthanoid silicates, Ln10(SiO4)6O3(Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Y, Ho, Er and Yb)

An equation for the activation energy of ionic conduction in silica glasses is developed. The approach uses the classical ideas of ionic crystal theory and elasticity theory. The equation finally derived involves the radius and valence of the modifier ion, the lattice constant of the glass, the electronic charge, the shear modulus, and three arbitrary parameters. Two of these parameters are shown to be related to the geometry of the silica network and are exactly determined from diffusion of gases in glass data. The other parameter is shown to be approximately numerically equal to the dielectric constant. he theory is compared with the experimental results of 140 glass compositions.
