Alternative conifer release treatments affect microclimate and soil nitrogen mineralization
Phillip E. Reynolds,Naresh V. Thevathasan,J.A. Simpson,Andrew M. Gordon,R.A Lautenschlager,Wayne F. Bell,D.A. Gresch,D.A. Buckley +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the effects of alternative conifer release practices on ecosystem processes, wildlife populations, and spruce production. And they concluded that application of glyphosate is the best option evaluated for effective weed control and optimal nutrient release.

Influence of alternative conifer release treatments on soil nutrient movement
J.A. Simpson,Andrew M. Gordon,D.A. Gresch,Phillip E. Reynolds,D.A. Buckley,R. A. Lautenschlager,F. W. Bell +6 more
TL;DR: Zero tension soil solution samplers were used to collect soil solution at 75 cm for one and one-half years after the following treatments, showing no substantial treatment related differences in the movement of selected nutrients among these treatments.
Alternative conifer release treatments affect leaf area index of competing vegetation and available light for seedling growth
Phillip E. Reynolds,D.A. Buckley,J.A. Simpson,Andrew M. Gordon,D.A. Gresch,F. Wayne Bell,R. A. Lautenschlager +6 more
TL;DR: Leaf area index (LAI) of competing vegetation and photosynthetically-active radiation (PAR) for spruce seedling growth were measured during the first growing season after alternative conifer release treatments, with the primary competitor being trembling aspen.
