El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar, en el vivero, el efecto de tres sustratos organicos, comparados con el sustrato tradicional, sobre el comportamiento morfologico de plantulas de dos especies, cedro (Cedrela odorata) y caoba (Swietenia macrophylla). El sustrato tradicional fue tierra agricola, proveniente de los primeros 10 cm superficiales. Los sustratos organicos fueron una mezcla de 80% de sustrato tradicional y 20% de material organico: cascarilla de arroz, bagazo de cana y compost de cacao. Las evaluaciones se realizaron a los 90 dias luego de repicadas las plantulas. Los resultados indican que el comportamiento morfologico de los Plantulas de caoba y cedro es mejor cuando se utiliza el sustrato con compost de cacao. Los resultados pueden estar relacionados a un mayor aporte de cationes y a la mejora de los parametros fisicos del suelo observados en el sustrato con compost de cacao.  El Indice de Calidad de Dickson es mejor para las plantulas de las dos especies producidas en sustratos con compost de cacao comparado con las plantulas crecidas en los otros tres sustratos.

COMPORTAMIENTO MORFOLÓGICO DE CEDRO (Cedrela odorata) Y CAOBA (Swietenia macrophylla) EN RESPUESTA AL TIPO DE SUSTRATO EN VIVERO

Moisture is one of the most critical factors affecting nutrient mineralization in soils due to its effect on microbial activities. This study was carried out to determine the optimum moisture content that enhances microbial mineralization of N and P from organically amended ultisol and oxisol. One kilogram (1 kg) portion of air-dried samples of loamy sand and sandy clay loam was amended with composted cow dung at the rate of 10 g kg−1. The soils’ moisture contents were adjusted to 10, 30, 50, 70 and 100% of their field moisture capacities (FMC), and incubated for a period of 10 weeks in the laboratory. Microbial respiration measured as CO2 evolution and the concentrations of mineralized N and P in the amended soils were determined fortnightly for the 10-week period. There was significant positive correlation between moisture content and CO2-C, and between CO2-C and mineralized N. Concentrations of CO2-C, mineralized N and P were highest between 50 and 70% of the soils’ FMC and lowest at 10 and 100% of the FMC. Varying moisture contents had clear significant effects on microbial mineralization of N and P in soils. Microbial mineralization of N and P from the cow dung–amended soils was optimized at the moisture levels ranging from 50 to 70% of the test soils’ FMC.

Microbial Respiration and Nitrogen and Phosphorus Mineralization in Cow Dung–Amended Soils Depending on Moisture Contents: a Microcosm Study

Purpose: An experiment was conducted to study the effect of fertilizer types and rates on the production of moringa in Ogbomoso on the Teaching and Research Farm of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, in 2012 and 2013 planting seasons.Methodology: The experimental design was randomized complete block design with 3 replicates. Nine treatments were used. The treatments were no fertilizer, 400 kg/ha NPK, 600 kg /ha NPK, 800 kg/ha NPK, 1000 kg/ha NPK, 2.5 t/ha tithonia compost, 5.0 t/ha tithonia compost, 7.5 t/ha tithonia compost and 10.0 t/ha tithonia compost. The land was prepared by ploughing and harrowing after the pre cropping soil sampling to determine the physical and chemical properties of the soil. Data collected were plant height, number of leave/plants, dry matter yield, fruit and seed yield components, biomass proximate and elemental compositions. The analyses of variance done were on the data collected and means were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (P <0.05).Results: Vegetative growth of moringa was better enhanced by the application of 1000 kg/ha NPK, as it produced the tallest plant height and the greatest number of leaves/plants which is followed by the 10.0 t/ha tithonia compost. The fertilizer application had significant effect on the seed and fruit yield of moringa. 1000kg/ha of NPK gave the highest seed and fruit yield components such as fruit set, number of fruits per plant and 100 seed weight. The application of 10.0 t/ha tithonia compost had highest proximate and nutrient composition in moringa leaves production.Unique contribution to theory, policy and practice: In conclusion, the application of 10.0 t/ha tithonia compost produce a comparable result as 1000 kg/ha NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer and may be used as alternate to NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer in the production of moringa. Hence 1000kg of NPK/ha or 10.0 tons tithonia compost/ha were recommended for moringa biomass and seed production in Ogbomoso
