Cytotoxicity, blood compatibility and antimicrobial activity of two cyanoacrylate glues for surgical use.

Objective

To describe a technique for standing inguinal hernioplasty in horses using cyanoacrylate glue, and to evaluate its effect on prevention of recurrent inguinal herniation in stallions that had previous acquired strangulated inguinal hernia (SIH)

Stallions (n = 10) with a history of SIH



Methods

Hernioplasty was performed in standing horses using 4 laparoscopic portals The mesorchium was retracted caudomedially using Babcock forceps A flexible polyethylene extension tube was introduced through the sheath of a laparoscopic needle and n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (2 mL) was injected into the inguinal canal including its margins while a 2nd Babcock forceps prevented deep ventral diffusion of the cyanoacrylate The craniolateral parts of the vaginal ring were compressed until full adhesion between the visceral and parietal walls was achieved In 2 horses, the lateral part of the vaginal ring was sutured before gluing A contralateral approach was used to check the caudomedial part of the vaginal ring



Results

No recurrence (1–4 years) of inguinal hernia was reported No major complications occurred and cosmetic outcome was excellent All horses were used for their intended purpose and 7 horses being used as breeding stallions remained fertile



Conclusion

Standing inguinal hernioplasty using cyanoacrylate seems to provide efficient and secure closure of the vaginal ring in stallions

Standing laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty using cyanoacrylate for preventing recurrence of acquired strangulated inguinal herniation in 10 stallions

Background The use of cyanoacrylate substances as tissue adhesives is of valuable aid in surgery, especially in cases of injuries of the intraabdominal organs, where the haemorrhage is very difficult to control. Materials and methods We investigated the efficiency of isobutyl-2-cyanoacrylate as a tissue adhesive in the haemostasis and adhesion of different types of wounds in solid and hollow organs. Forty-six dogs underwent single-organ (26 dogs) and combined-organ (20 dogs) procedures; cuneiform excisions of the liver and the spleen, as well as incisions of the small intestine were carried out. The wound surfaces were coated with isobutyl-2-cyanoacrylate and approximated. Results The majority (91.3%) of the surgical operations were uncomplicated, in which a very good macroscopical and histological result was achieved. Histological examination of the surgical injuries, performed 4 months later, confirmed complete wound healing. Conclusion Isobutyl-2-cyanoacrylate proved to be a very effective tissue adhesive for both solid and hollow organs, even for high risk surgical operations.

Background

Although cyanoacrylate glue (CA) has been widely used in various kinds of medical applications, its application in gastrointestinal anastomosis remains limited, and outcomes of experimental studies have not been satisfactory. This systematic review summarizes research regarding CA application in intestinal and colorectal anastomosis, and correlates methodological aspects to experimental outcomes.



Methods

A systematic literature search was performed using Medline, Embase, Cochrane, and Web-of-Science libraries. Articles were selected if CA was applied to intestinal or colorectal anastomoses. Included articles were categorized according to CA molecular structure; the method details in each study were extracted and analyzed.



Results

Twenty-two articles were included. More than half of the inclusions reported positive outcomes (seven articles) or neutral outcomes (eight articles). Analysis of the methods revealed that methodological details such as CA dosage, time of polymerization were not consistently reported. Porcine studies, inverted anastomosis, and n-butyl-cyanoacrylate studies showed more positive outcomes; everted anastomosis, and oversized sutures might negatively influence the outcomes.



Conclusions

Owing to the positive outcome from the porcine studies, application of CA in gastrointestinal (GI) anastomosis still seems promising. To achieve a better consistency, more methodological details need to be provided in future studies. Optimizing the dosage of CA, choice of animal model, inverted anastomosis construction, and other method details may improve intestinal and colorectal anastomoses with CA application in future studies. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Authors reports the results of an experimental study on the usefulness of n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate in abdominal surgery. The research, performed on Wistar rats and Landrace pigs, is constituted by an early phase, to verify the tissue reaction to the n-butyl-2-cyano-acrylate and its adhesive properties, and a main phase, in which it was evaluated the efficacy of n-butyl-2-cyano-acrylate as the only support or as an adjunct to the usual methods in intestinal synthesis. histological and angiographic examination of the surgical specimens demonstrated the tissue autotoxicity and the good adhesive effect of the tissue glue. Because of these characteristic, authors propose its employment to reinforce intestinal sutures performed with the usual methods in high risk condition.
