This investigation tested a theoretical model of communication behavior with specific Facebook friends, such that attitudes toward (a) online self-disclosure, and (b) online social connection, predict Facebook communication frequency and, in turn, relational closeness. Participants included both undergraduates and older adults. Results generally supported the model, with the interaction effect between self-disclosure and social connection directly predicting Facebook communication and indirectly predicting relational closeness. For both dependent variables, online social connection was a positive predictor at low and moderate levels of online self-disclosure, but high levels reduced the association to nonsignificance. One implication of these results was that high-warrant information may discourage those with social anxiety from social network site communication.

Attitudes Toward Online Social Connection and Self-Disclosure as Predictors of Facebook Communication and Relational Closeness

Previous studies have shown that women disclose to their close friends more often than men. However, no study has compared the intimacy of their disclosures across different media and different relationship types. The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in self-disclosure between Facebook friends and between face-to-face friends.  One hundred ninety-seven college women and 120 college men in this study were asked to report their levels of self-disclosure with three types of friends: an exclusive Facebook friend, an exclusive face-to-face friend, and a recently added Facebook friend. One-way MANOVA was used to test the hypothesis that women will self-disclose to their Facebook and face-to-face friends more than men. Results provided partial support for the hypothesis. Women disclosed to their exclusive face-to-face friends and exclusive Facebook friends more than men; however, men had more intimate discussions with their recently added Facebook friends than women did. Both men and women disclosed more to their exclusive face-to-face friends than to exclusive Facebook friends.  Overall, these findings suggest that, regardless of the medium, both genders disclose more to the person they consider more intimate.

Examining Gender Differences in Self-disclosure on Facebook Versus Face-to-Face

This study aims to examine how the users' engagement with health information benefits their well-being and to demonstrate the underlying mechanism of the relationships through bonding and bridging social capital. An online survey was conducted with 522 WeChat users in China. Structural equation modeling using the maximum likelihood of estimation was employed to test the study's hypothesized model. Bootstrapping methods were used to examine mediation effects. The results revealed that users' liking, sharing, and commenting behaviors were positively related to the bonding and bridging capital accumulated on WeChat. These two forms of social capital were also positively associated with users' psychological well-being, though bridging capital exerted more power in our research model. Moreover, both bonding and bridging capital mediated the relationship between WeChat affordances and psychological well-being. The findings shed new light on directions for leveraging mobile social media as an alternative means to bring about improvements in well-being in mobile-phone-saturated China. This is likely to be the first study that examines the mediating roles of bonding and bridging social capital on the relationship between users' health information engagement and users' psychological well-being. By providing robust findings by adopting the variable-centered approach in a health context, the findings of this study are promising for the extension and theoretical development of mobile social media research in the context of health information engagement.

How does WeChat's active engagement with health information contribute to psychological well-being through social capital?

The many features available on social network sites complicate interpretation of research results in uses and gratifications studies.  This paper proposes a perspective that focuses on the communication role of the user that may promote greater understanding of uses and gratifications results, and applies its use.  Results of this analysis suggest that our understanding of uses and gratifications based on survey research questions will benefit from distinguishing between user role as a message source or receiver. More specifically, results of this analysis found the communication role of the user was able to predict certain social network site gratifications.  While results were promising, additional research should be conducted to refine these categorizations for predicting media gratifications.

This exploratory study investigates social network sites (SNS) users’ time allocation behavior among various traditional and new media Specifically, it examines the difference in degree of dependency on SNS between the young generation and the general population as a new form of news medium based on the media system dependency (MSD) and the microeconomic consumption (MEC) theories The research results reveal that SNS, along with other online media, such as online audio/video news, are the preferred news sources for young people and they are more likely to be interested in soft news than hard news SNS has become online users’ news portal and is closely related to their other online and user-generated content media use The significant difference in news media use between the general population and college students also illustrates the importance of choosing the sample in studying SNS and media use
