A qualitative case study in 15 community colleges across the country found that learning assistance centers and specialized skills labs are an important means of increasing students' academic preparedness for postsecondary study. Since these facilities provide instruction or support in reading, writing, and math skills, it appears that they play a valuable remedial role. Most of the assistance occurs in the form of tutoring and computer-assisted instruction, and some of the centers also provide specialized learning workshops and self-paced remedial courses. The majority of colleges have several learning centers and labs, and duplication of services may explain the lower than expected demand for assistance services seen in some of the sites. Se analiza una experiencia de aula para ensenar lectura y escritura academicas. La experiencia estuvo orientada hacia el desarrollo de la competencia argumentativa a traves de textos de opinion, tomando como base teorica y metodologica la Pedagogia de Genero, derivada de la Linguistica Sistemico-Funcional. La propuesta parte del conocimiento de los generos discursivos y privilegia el trabajo conjunto y la vision del docente como mediador. Durante la intervencion, se puso en juego los saberes previos, el sentido social del texto, la delimitacion del campo, tenor y modo y el analisis de las formas del lenguaje al servicio de la intencion comunicativa. Desde alli, quedaron en evidencia diversos problemas que persisten en los estudiantes a nivel de la lectura y la escritura: las insuficiencias en el conocimiento previo, la tension analisis / sintesis, la transferibilidad del analisis, la dimension argumentativa del genero comentario, la extension textual, la gestion de las fuentes y la construccion del otro. Concluimos que la introduccion de problematicas sociopoliticas a traves de los textos es importante para la planificacion de las secuencias didacticas, en tanto que van dirigidos hacia la formacion de ciudadanos desde el derecho a la palabra, la pluralidad de puntos de vista, la participacion democratica y la coexistencia en el disenso, en los textos escritos.

A Comment on "Writing and Learning across the Curriculum"

This article describes a research project intended to yield data about the state of writing across the curriculum at one urban college campus site. The research included collecting writing from all courses of a random sample of freshmen-senior students during one college semester. Writing was coded and categorized according to audience and function. Data were analyzed, providing insight on, for example, audiences and functions by subject area and year and relationships between audiences and functions. Results indicate that teachers in the role of evaluators are the most prevalent audience for student writing and copied note taking, the most common writing function performed by students.Ultimately, the authors conclude by recommending a greater amount of writing to multiple audiences and for various functions.
