Holographic particle characterization uses in-line holographic video microscopy to track and characterize individual colloidal particles dispersed in their native fluid media. Applications range from fundamental research in statistical physics to product development in biopharmaceuticals and medical diagnostic testing. The information encoded in a hologram can be extracted by fitting to a generative model based on the Lorenz-Mie theory of light scattering. Treating hologram analysis as a high-dimensional inverse problem has been exceptionally successful, with conventional optimization algorithms yielding nanometer precision for a typical particle's position and part-per-thousand precision for its size and index of refraction. Machine learning previously has been used to automate holographic particle characterization by detecting features of interest in multi-particle holograms and estimating the particles' positions and properties for subsequent refinement. This study presents an updated end-to-end neural-network solution called CATCH (Characterizing and Tracking Colloids Holographically) whose predictions are fast, precise, and accurate enough for many real-world high-throughput applications and can reliably bootstrap conventional optimization algorithms for the most demanding applications. The ability of CATCH to learn a representation of Lorenz-Mie theory that fits within a diminutive 200 kB hints at the possibility of developing a greatly simplified formulation of light scattering by small objects.

Watermarking is one of the most common techniques used to protect data’s authenticity, integrity, and security. The obfuscation in the frequency domain used in the watermarking method makes the watermarking stronger than the obfuscation in the spatial domain. It occupies an important place in watermarking works in imperceptibility, capacity, and robustness. Finding the optimal location to hide the watermarking is one of the most challenging tasks in these methods and affects the method’s performance. In this article, sample identification information is processed with the method of watermaking on the hiding environment created by using a chaos-based random number generator on biomedical data to provide solutions to problems such as visual attack, identity theft, and information confusion. In order to obtain biomedical data, a lensless digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM) setup was designed, and holographic data of human blood and cancer cell lines, which are widely used in the laboratory environment, were obtained. The standard USAF 1951 target was used to evaluate the resolution of our imaging setup. Various QR codes were generated for medical sample identification, and the captured medical data were processed by watermarking it with chaos-based random number generators. A new method using chaos-based discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and singular value decomposition (SVD) has been developed and applied to high-resolution data to eliminate the problem of encrypted data being directly targeted by third-party attacks. The performance of the proposed new watermarking method has been demonstrated by various robustness and invisibility tests. Experimental results showed that the proposed scheme reached an average PSNR value of 564588 dB and SSIM value of 0.9972 against several geometric and destructive attacks, which means that the proposed method does not affect the image quality and also ensures the security of the watermarking information. The results of the proposed method have shown that it can be used efficiently in various fields.

DWT-SVD Based Watermarking for High-Resolution Medical Holographic Images

Microfluidics has emerged as a robust technology for diverse applications, ranging from bio-medical diagnostics to chemical analysis. Among the different characterization techniques that can be used to analyze samples at the microfluidic scale, the coupling of photonic detection techniques and on-chip configurations is particularly advantageous due to its non-invasive nature, which permits sensitive, real-time, high throughput, and rapid analyses, taking advantage of the microfluidic special environments and reduced sample volumes. Putting a special emphasis on integrated detection schemes, this review article explores the most relevant advances in the on-chip implementation of UV–vis, near-infrared, terahertz, and X-ray-based techniques for different characterizations, ranging from punctual spectroscopic or scattering-based measurements to different types of mapping/imaging. The principles of the techniques and their interest are discussed through their application to different systems.

On-Chip Photonic Detection Techniques for Non-Invasive In Situ Characterizations at the Microfluidic Scale

The degradation of visual quality in remote sensing images caused by haze presents significant challenges in interpreting and extracting essential information. To effectively mitigate the impact of haze on image quality, we propose an unsupervised generative adversarial network specifically designed for remote sensing image dehazing. This network includes two generators with identical structures and two discriminators with identical structures. One generator is focused on image dehazing, while the other generates images with added haze. The two discriminators are responsible for distinguishing whether an image is real or generated. The generator, employing an encoder-decoder architecture, is designed based on the proposed multi-scale feature-extraction modules and attention modules. The proposed multi-scale feature-extraction module, comprising three distinct branches, aims to extract features with varying receptive fields. Each branch comprises dilated convolutions and attention modules. The proposed attention module includes both channel and spatial attention components. It guides the feature-extraction network to emphasize haze and texture within the remote sensing image. For enhanced generator performance, a multi-scale discriminator is also designed with three branches. Furthermore, an improved loss function is introduced by incorporating color-constancy loss into the conventional loss framework. In comparison to state-of-the-art methods, the proposed approach achieves the highest peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index metrics. These results convincingly demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method in effectively removing haze from remote sensing images.

Remote Sensing Image Dehazing through an Unsupervised Generative Adversarial Network.

Image dehazing has become a crucial prerequisite for most outdoor computer applications. The majority of existing dehazing models can achieve the haze removal problem. However, they fail to preserve colors and fine details. Addressing this problem, we introduce a novel high-performing attention-based dehazing model (ADMC2-net)that successfully incorporates both RGB and HSV color spaces to maintain color properties. This model consists of two parallel densely connected sub-models (RGB and HSV) followed by a new efficient attention module. This attention module comprises pixel-attention and channel-attention mechanisms to get more haze-relevant features. Experimental results analyses can validate that our proposed model (ADMC2-net) can achieve superior results on synthetic and real-world datasets and outperform most of state-of-the-art methods.

An Efficient Attentional Image Dehazing Deep Network Using Two Color Space (ADMC2-net).

The preservation of image details in the defogging process is still one key challenge in the field of deep learning. The network uses the generation of confrontation loss and cyclic consistency loss to ensure that the generated defog image is similar to the original image, but it cannot retain the details of the image. To this end, we propose a detail enhanced image CycleGAN to retain the detail information during the process of defogging. Firstly, the algorithm uses the CycleGAN network as the basic framework and combines the U-Net network’s idea with this framework to extract visual information features in different spaces of the image in multiple parallel branches, and it introduces Dep residual blocks to learn deeper feature information. Secondly, a multi-head attention mechanism is introduced in the generator to strengthen the expressive ability of features and balance the deviation produced by the same attention mechanism. Finally, experiments are carried out on the public data set D-Hazy. Compared with the CycleGAN network, the network structure of this paper improves the SSIM and PSNR of the image dehazing effect by 12.2% and 8.1% compared with the network and can retain image dehazing details.

ADE-CycleGAN: A Detail Enhanced Image Dehazing CycleGAN Network

A novel method based on optofluidic lensless-holography for detecting the composition of oil droplets is presented in this paper. The three most important characteristic parameters in the holograms of oil droplets and particles with different sizes were compared and analyzed, and the correlation between the characteristic parameters and the molecular structure (different number of carbon-hydrogen bonds) of oil droplet was determined. In addition, the experimental results show that the detection results of the newly developed lensless holographic imaging system are not affected by the surface properties of oil droplets. By detecting PEA (amino-terminated polyoxypropylene, a fuel additive), it is demonstrated that the developed method is sufficiently sensitive to the trace amount of additives or impurities in the oil. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the lensless-holography combined with the optofluidic technology has been used to detect the composition of oil droplets. The portability of the developed device is very suitable for real-time on-site detection.
