 Abstract—The increase in availability and popularity of mobile wireless devices has lead researchers to develop a wide variety of Mobile Ad-hoc NETworking (MANET) protocols to exploit the unique communication opportunities presented by these devices. Devices are able to communicate directly using the wireless spectrum in a peer-to-peer fashion, and route messages through intermediate nodes, however the nature of wireless shared communication and mobile devices result in many routing and security challenges which must be addressed before deploying a MANET. In this paper we investigate the range of MANET routing protocols available and discuss the functionalities of several ranging from early protocols such as DSDV to more advanced such as MAODV, our protocol study focuses upon works by Perkins in developing and improving MANET routing. A range of literature relating to the field of MANET routing was identified and reviewed, we also reviewed literature on the topic of securing AODV based MANETs as this may be the most popular MANET protocol. The literature review identified a number of trends within research papers such as exclusive use of the random waypoint mobility model, excluding key metrics from simulation results and not comparing protocol performance against available alternatives.

A Review of Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad-Hoc NETworks (MANET)

We study the effects of node mobility on the wireless links and protocol performance in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). First we examine the behavior of links through an analytical framework and develop statistical models to accurately characterize the distribution of lifetime of such wireless links in MANETs. We compute the lifetimes of links through a two-state Markov model, and use these results to model multi-hop paths and topology changes. We show that the analytical solution follows closely the results obtained through discrete-event simulations for two mobility models, namely, random direction and random waypoint mobility models. Finally, we present a comprehensive simulation study that combines the results from the findings in simulations with the analytical results to bring further insight on how different types of mobility translate into protocol performance.

In recent years the rapid development in telecommunication technologies leads to a non linear growth in the number of users of mobile electronic gadgets accessible to a communication network. These electronic gadgets are nothing but the nodes of the MANET (Mobile Ad hoc Network) and thus the mobility of the nodes effects a much the performance of the network. A change in mobility can be meant as the change in speed of node during motion in the network or pause time at different points during its motion between a source and destination point in the network. Due to change in mobility link between neighbors nodes can break a number of times as a result of which the performance of a network may be hampered. Also a number of packets may be dropped at different layers of the network. This paper describes a detailed analysis of performance affected due to change in mobility. The parameter describing the reason of variation in performance are (1) number of link breaks and (2) number of packet delivered. (3)End to end delay. The simulator we have used in our work for the calculation of performance matrices is GLOMOSIM. The performance comparison has also made considering two types of routing protocols AODV and DSR.

Analysis of effect of mobility and transmission power on AODV and DSR in mobile Adhoc network

Mobility is a prominent characteristic of MANETs, and is the main factor affecting topology change and route invalidation, which finally leads to increase the design difficulty of effective routing protocol. In this paper, we have studied the impacts of mobility on routing protocol performance of MANETs with simulation, which uses ns-2 as the simulation tool, 802.11 as the wireless MAC protocol and AODV as the routing protocol. The results show that the increase of mobility does not reduce the routing protocol performance distinctly. In some circumstances, it even increases the routing protocol performance. The works of this paper can be a basis of other studies of MANETs.
