High-temperature CO2 electrolysis in solid-oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) could greatly assist in the reduction of CO2 emissions by electrochemically converting CO2 to valuable fuels through effective electrothermal activation of the stable CO bond. If powered by renewable energy resources, it could also provide an advanced energy-storage method for their intermittent output. Compared to low-temperature electrochemical CO2 reduction, CO2 electrolysis in SOECs at high temperature exhibits higher current density and energy efficiency and has thus attracted much recent attention. The history of its development and its fundamental mechanisms, cathode materials, oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte materials, and anode materials are highlighted. Electrode, electrolyte, and electrode-electrolyte interface degradation issues are comprehensively summarized. Fuel-assisted SOECs with low-cost fuels applied to the anode to decrease the overpotential and electricity consumption are introduced. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects for future research into high-temperature CO2 electrolysis in SOECs are included.

High‐Temperature CO 2 Electrolysis in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells: Developments, Challenges, and Prospects

Enhancing CO2 electrolysis performance with vanadium-doped perovskite cathode in solid oxide electrolysis cell

Reforming CH4 into syngas using CO2 remains a fundamental challenge due to carbon deposition and nanocatalyst instability. We, for the first time, demonstrate highly efficient electrochemical reforming of CH4/CO2 to produce syngas in a solid oxide electrolyser with CO2 electrolysis in the cathode and CH4 oxidation in the anode. In situ exsolution of an anchored metal/oxide interface on perovskite electrode delivers remarkably enhanced coking resistance and catalyst stability. In situ Fourier transform infrared characterizations combined with first principle calculations disclose the interface activation of CO2 at a transition state between a CO2 molecule and a carbonate ion. Carbon removal at the interfaces is highly favorable with electrochemically provided oxygen species, even in the presence of H2 or H2O. This novel strategy provides optimal performance with no obvious degradation after 300 hours of high-temperature operation and 10 redox cycles, suggesting a reliable process for conversion of CH4 into syngas using CO2.

Highly efficient electrochemical reforming of CH4/CO2 in a solid oxide electrolyser

Co-electrolysis of CO 2 and H 2 O in high-temperature solid oxide electrolysis cells: Recent advance in cathodes

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) can directly convert CO2 to CO and O2 that are important building blocks for chemical production and other applications. However, the use of SOECs for direct CO2 electrolysis has been hampered mainly due to the absence of a stable, highly catalytically active and cost effective cathode (fuel electrode) material. Here we report a ceramic SOEC cathode material of perovskite-structured Sr1.9Fe1.5Mo0.4Ni0.1O6−δ for direct CO2 electrolysis. By annealing at 800 °C in H2, homogeneously dispersed nano-sized NiFe alloy nanoparticles are exsolved from the Sr1.9Fe1.5Mo0.4Ni0.1O6−δ perovskite lattice. The exsolved NiFe nanoparticles significantly enhance the chemical adsorption and surface reaction kinetics of CO2 with the cathode. SOECs with the novel cathode have demonstrated a peak current density of 2.16 A cm−2 under an applied voltage of 1.5 V at 800 °C and have demonstrated stable direct CO2 electrolysis performance during 500 h of operation under current density above 1 A cm−2 at 800 °C.
