High-spin spectroscopy of the 142Eu, 143Eu and 144Eu nuclei

New Nilsson (\ensuremath{\kappa},\ensuremath{\mu}) parameter sets for the proton N=4, 5, and 6 harmonic oscillator shells are deduced for the A\ensuremath{\approxeq}120--140 mass region by fitting a potential-energy-surface calculation, using the Nilsson-Strutinsky method, to 28 experimental bandhead energies. The results from both the standard and the fitted Nilsson (\ensuremath{\kappa},\ensuremath{\mu}) parameter sets are compared with experimental bandhead energies. The fitted (\ensuremath{\kappa},\ensuremath{\mu}) parameter sets achieve a significant improvement in the bandhead energies over this region. In addition, calculated single-particle levels using both the Woods-Saxon and the Nilsson potentials are compared.

The level structure of the /sup 137/Pr nucleus has been investigated via in-beam ..gamma..-ray spectroscopy using an 81-MeV /sup 122/Sn(/sup 19/F, 4n) reaction. A strongly populated positive-parity band was observed based on a proton orbital with (..pi..,..cap alpha..) = (+, + 1/2); its first backbend, due to the alignment of a pair of h/sub 11/2/ protons, was seen at a rotational frequency (h/2..pi..)..omega.. = 0.34 MeV. Such a high crossing frequency is taken as evidence for a triaxial shape (..gamma../similar to/30/sup 0/) for the ground-state band of /sup 137/Pr. Above the crossing, both signatures (..pi..,..cap alpha..) = +, +- (1/2) were observed up to I/sup ..pi../ = 37/2/sup +/ and 43/2/sup +/ (for ..cap alpha.. = +1/2 and ..cap alpha.. = -1/2), respectively. A negative-parity band, based on an h/sub 11/2/ proton orbital, was also observed showing a blocked h/sub 11/2/ proton crossing frequency of h/2..pi omega.. = 0.44 MeV. In addition, a ..delta..I = 1 band with strong M1 transitions and a small signature splitting was observed, which is believed to be based on the ..pi..h/sub 11/2/x(..nu..h/sub 11/2/)/sup 2/ configuration. The alignment of the h/sub 11/2/ neutron pair drives the nuclear core towards ..gamma.. = -60/sup 0/, namely, themore » collective oblate shape, while the alignment of the h/sub 11/2/ proton pair drives the nuclear core towards ..gamma.. = 0/sup 0/, the collective prolate shape. These results are consistent with cranked shell model calculations.« less

The level structure of /sup 139/Pm has been investigated. The yrast band, based on a decoupled h/sub 11/2/ proton orbital, was observed up to J/sup ..pi../ = (59/2/sup -/. A sharp backbend with a surprisingly large gain in alignment ..delta..i = 14h-dash-bar was observed at a frequency h-dash-bar..omega.. = 0.43 MeV. This large increase in alignment, which is twice that observed in the /sup 137/Pm isotope, is due to the simultaneous alignment of both a pair of h/sub 11/2/ protons and h/sub 11/2/ neutrons. A ..delta..J = 1 sideband based on the neutron-aligned configuration ..pi..h/sub 11/2/x(..nu..h/sub 11/2/)/sup 2/ with a large negative ..gamma.. deformation (..gamma..---60/sup 0/) was also observed. The observation of both ..pi..h/sub 11/2/ and ..nu..h/sub 11/2/ alignments is consistent with cranked-shell model calculations.
