An attention residual u-net with differential preprocessing and geometric postprocessing: Learning how to segment vasculature including intracranial aneurysms

Background Studies have rarely investigated stenosis detection from head and neck CT angiography scans because accurate interpretation is time consuming and labor intensive. Purpose To develop an automated convolutional neural network-based method for accurate stenosis detection and plaque classification in head and neck CT angiography images and compare its performance with that of radiologists. Materials and Methods A deep learning (DL) algorithm was constructed and trained with use of head and neck CT angiography images that were collected retrospectively from four tertiary hospitals between March 2020 and July 2021. CT scans were partitioned into training, validation, and independent test sets at a ratio of 7:2:1. An independent test set of CT angiography scans was collected prospectively between October 2021 and December 2021 in one of the four tertiary centers. Stenosis grade categories were as follows: mild stenosis (<50%), moderate stenosis (50%-69%), severe stenosis (70%-99%), and occlusion (100%). The stenosis diagnosis and plaque classification of the algorithm were compared with the ground truth of consensus by two radiologists (with more than 10 years of experience). The performance of the models was analyzed in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results There were 3266 patients (mean age ± SD, 62 years ± 12; 2096 men) evaluated. The consistency between radiologists and the DL-assisted algorithm on plaque classification was 85.6% (320 of 374 cases [95% CI: 83.2, 88.6]) on a per-vessel basis. Moreover, the artificial intelligence model assisted in visual assessment, such as increasing confidence in the degree of stenosis. This reduced the time needed for diagnosis and report writing of radiologists from 28.8 minutes ± 5.6 to 12.4 minutes ± 2.0 (P < .001). Conclusion A deep learning algorithm for head and neck CT angiography interpretation accurately determined vessel stenosis and plaque classification and had equivalent diagnostic performance when compared with experienced radiologists. © RSNA, 2023 Supplemental material is available for this article.

Dense, deep learning-based intracranial aneurysm detection on TOF MRI using two-stage regularized U-Net.

An in vivo model is necessary for toxicology. This review analyzed the uses of zebrafish (Danio rerio) in toxicology based on bibliometrics. Totally 56,816 publications about zebrafish from 2002 to 2023 were found in Web of Science Core Collection, with Toxicology as the top 6 among all disciplines. Accordingly, the bibliometric map reveals that “toxicity” has become a hot keyword. It further reveals that the most common exposure types include acute, chronic, and combined exposure. The toxicological effects include behavioral, intestinal, cardiovascular, hepatic, endocrine toxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, genotoxicity, and reproductive and transgenerational toxicity. The mechanisms include oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota. The toxicants commonly evaluated by using zebrafish model include nanomaterials, arsenic, metals, bisphenol, and dioxin. Overall, zebrafish provide a unique and well-accepted model to investigate the toxicological effects and mechanisms. We also discussed the possible ways to address some of the limitations of zebrafish model, such as the combination of human organoids to avoid species differences. 

The uses of zebrafish (Danio rerio) as an in vivo model for toxicological studies: A review based on bibliometrics.

Auto-detection of cerebral aneurysms via convolutional neural network (CNN) is being increasingly reported. However, few studies to date have accurately predicted the risk, but not the diagnosis itself. We developed a multi-view CNN for the prediction of rupture risk involving small unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) based on three-dimensional (3D) digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The performance of a multi-view CNN-ResNet50 in accurately predicting the rupture risk (high vs. non-high) of UIAs in the anterior circulation measuring less than 7 mm in size was compared with various CNN architectures (AlexNet and VGG16), with similar type but different layers (ResNet101 and ResNet152), and single image-based CNN (single-view ResNet50). The sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of risk prediction were estimated and compared according to CNN architecture. The study included 364 UIAs in training and 93 in test datasets. A multi-view CNN-ResNet50 exhibited a sensitivity of 81.82 (66.76-91.29)%, a specificity of 81.63 (67.50-90.76)%, and an overall accuracy of 81.72 (66.98-90.92)% for risk prediction. AlexNet, VGG16, ResNet101, ResNet152, and single-view CNN-ResNet50 showed similar specificity. However, the sensitivity and overall accuracy were decreased (AlexNet, 63.64% and 76.34%; VGG16, 68.18% and 74.19%; ResNet101, 68.18% and 73.12%; ResNet152, 54.55% and 72.04%; and single-view CNN-ResNet50, 50.00% and 64.52%) compared with multi-view CNN-ResNet50. Regarding F1 score, it was the highest in multi-view CNN-ResNet50 (80.90 (67.29-91.81)%). Our study suggests that multi-view CNN-ResNet50 may be feasible to assess the rupture risk in small-sized UIAs.

Multi-View Convolutional Neural Networks in Rupture Risk Assessment of Small, Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms.

Background Cerebral aneurysm detection is a challenging task. Deep learning may become a supportive tool for more accurate interpretation. Purpose To develop a highly sensitive deep learning-based algorithm that assists in the detection of cerebral aneurysms on CT angiography images. Materials and Methods Head CT angiography images were retrospectively retrieved from two hospital databases acquired across four different scanners between January 2015 and June 2019. The data were divided into training and validation sets; 400 additional independent CT angiograms acquired between July and December 2019 were used for external validation. A deep learning-based algorithm was constructed and assessed. Both internal and external validation were performed. Jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed. Results A total of 1068 patients (mean age, 57 years ± 11 [standard deviation]; 660 women) were evaluated for a total of 1068 CT angiograms encompassing 1337 cerebral aneurysms. Of these, 534 CT angiograms (688 aneurysms) were assigned to the training set, and the remaining 534 CT angiograms (649 aneurysms) constituted the validation set. The sensitivity of the proposed algorithm for detecting cerebral aneurysms was 97.5% (633 of 649; 95% CI: 96.0, 98.6). Moreover, eight new aneurysms that had been overlooked in the initial reports were detected (1.2%, eight of 649). With the aid of the algorithm, the overall performance of radiologists in terms of area under the weighted alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic curve was higher by 0.01 (95% CI: 0.00, 0.03). Conclusion The proposed deep learning algorithm assisted radiologists in detecting cerebral aneurysms on CT angiography images, resulting in a higher detection rate. © RSNA, 2020 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Effects of antimony exposure on DNA damage and genome-wide variation in zebrafish (Danio rerio) liver.

It is common for doctors to simultaneously consider multi-modal information in diagnosis. However, how to use multi-modal medical images effectively has not been fully studied in the field of deep learning within such a context. In this paper, we address the task of end-to-end segmentation based on multi-modal data and propose a novel deep learning framework, multiple subspace attention-based deep multi-modal fusion network (referred to as MSAFusionNet hereon-forth). More specifically, MSAFusionNet consists of three main components: (1) a multiple subspace attention model that contains inter-attention modules and generalized squeeze-and-excitation modules, (2) a multi-modal fusion network which leverages CNN-LSTM layers to integrate sequential multi-modal input images, and (3) a densely-dilated U-Net as the encoder-decoder backbone for image segmentation. Experiments on ISLES 2018 data set have shown that MSAFusionNet achieves the state-of-the-art segmentation accuracy.
