This article presents the results of a meta-analysis of the existing research literature, in an effort to increase our understanding of the prevalence of domestic violence (DV) among pregnant women, and of risk factors associated with DV during pregnancy. Across 92 independent studies, the average reported prevalence of emotional abuse was 28.4%, physical abuse was 13.8%, and sexual abuse was 8.0%. Composite odds ratio effect sizes were calculated for the demographic, behavioral, and social risk factors identified by 55 independent studies. Both victimization and perpetration risk factors were analyzed. Abuse before pregnancy and lower education level were found to be strong predictors of abuse during pregnancy. Pregnancy being unintended by either the victim or the perpetrator, lower socioeconomic status, and being unmarried were found to be moderate predictors of abuse during pregnancy.

This study assesses the prevalence, types, and pattern of intimate partner violence (IPV) during lifetime and current pregnancy for 2,392 women in Lima, Peru. The reported lifetime prevalence of any IPV (physical, sexual, or emotional) is 45.1%. For women who experienced abuse, the prevalence of lifetime physical, emotional, and sexual IPV is 34.2%, 28.4%, and 8.7%, respectively. Older (>/= 30 years), unmarried, employed, and economically disadvantaged women and those with little education are more likely to experience lifetime and pregnancy IPV. Efforts at universal antepartum IPV screening and appropriate interventions are needed to reduce the burden of violence experienced by pregnant women.

Prevalence, Types, and Pattern of Intimate Partner Violence Among Pregnant Women in Lima, Peru

The objective of this article is to gain a better understanding of the magnitude of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Greece and to explore factors associated with increased risk of IPV prevalence. A cross-sectional study was undertaken among 1,122 men and women, aged 18 to 65, who are residents of urban areas of Greece. The questionnaire used included 3 sections and 39 items that examined the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, rate of IPV victimization and perpetration (physical, sexual, emotional), childhood experience of violence, and level of self-esteem. Statistical analysis showed self-esteem to be significantly associated with physical violence victimization and perpetration (odds ratio [OR] = .975, confidence interval [CI] = .955-.996; OR = .972, CI = .951-.993, respectively), whereas experience of abuse during childhood was shown to be a strong predictor in all six models of IPV victimization and perpetration (p < .001). Finally, gender, age and years of cohabitation were some sociodemographic and background characteristics found to increase the risk of specific forms of IPV. Conclusions drawn from the current study should be taken into account in attempts aiming at preventing or ameliorating the problem.

Rubella seroprevalence in an unvaccinated pregnant population in Malatya, Turkey

By the end of 1998, Turkey had launched the routine vaccination of infants against hepatitis B. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the immune response in a sample of vaccinated children aged 1-3 years in the city of Malatya. A total of 210 vaccinated children 12 to 48 months old were selected for the study with 30 cluster sampling in the city of Malatya, Turkey. The children were visited at their homes during January-April 2002. The information on demographic characteristics, family's and child's medical history was gathered, childrens' weight and height were measured and blood samples were taken. Anti-HBs, HbsAg and anti-HBc titers were assayed by micro-ELIZA from the sera. The mean age of the children was 26.3 months, 100 (47.6%) were male and 110 (52.4%) were female. Overall, 203 (96.7%) children had protective anti-HBs levels (> or = 10 IU/l), 0.5% showed evidence of natural infection (with positive anti-HBc and anti-HBs titers), 0.5% had acute or chronic infection (with positive HbsAg and anti-HBc titers) and 2.3% were seronegative. Geometric mean titer of anti-HBs among vaccinated children except those who had positive anti-HBc titers was 138.7 mIU/ml (95% CI:124.7-154.2) and seroconversion rates did not differ by age, sex, anthropometric measurements, time after third dose and place of vaccine administered (P > 0.05). The high seroprotection rate over 95% showed that routine infant vaccination program for hepatitis B was successfully carried out in the city Malatya.

Evaluation of the immune response to hepatitis B vaccination in children aged 1-3 years in Malatya, Turkey.

Goiter prevalence and urinary iodine excretion levels were assessed in 568 schoolchildren (317 boys and 251 girls), aged 7-11 years, living in the Malatya province, a well-known endemic goiter area in Turkey. Five hundred sixty-eight children aged 7-11 years consented to thyroid gland palpation and provided a urine sample on the day of examination in April 2004. Median urinary iodine concentration for the total group was 66 microg/L. There was an association between presence of goiter or not and urinary iodine levels (67 microg/L versus 62 microg/L, p=0.000). The median urinary iodine concentration was lower in rural areas than in urban areas (54.6 microg/L versus 59.7 microg/L, respectively) and schoolchildren living in rural areas had significantly lower urinary iodine levels (p=0.000). In conclusion, the present study reports mild iodine deficiency in the Malatya province, despite a mandatory iodization program in Turkey which has been in force since 1998.

Prevalence of goiter and urinary iodine status of 7-11-year-old children in Malatya province, Turkey.

Background: In Turkey, violence against women was established as a critical area of concern related to women and various prevention strategies have been developed since 1980. There are limited numbers of studies on violence during pregnancy in the country. This study was performed to determine the prevalence of physical, emotional and sexual violence during pregnancy in Malatya province and the associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional interview survey was conducted among pregnant women living in Malatya province between October 2003 and May 2004. Stratified probability-proportional-to- size sampling methodology was used for selecting the study population. A total of 824 pregnant women from 60 clusters were studied. Association between violence prevalences and womens' sociodemo- graphic, fertility and behavioural characteristics were evaluated. Results: During pregnancy 31.7% of women were exposed to any form of violence. Emotional violence was the most frequently reported form (26.7%), followed by sexual (9.7%) and physical violence (8.1%). Regular smoking (odds ratio (OR) 1.6), unwanted pregnancy (OR 1.8), living in urban area (OR 1.5), low education level of husband (OR 1.7), low family income (OR 1.9) and being in second trimester (OR 1.4) were determined to be the main predictors of overall violence during pregnancy. Conclusions: Violence during pregnancy is a common public health problem in Malatya. Low education level in partners, low family income, husband's unemployment, urban settlement, unwanted pregnancy and smoking should alert health staff towards violence at pregnancy and training of health personnel on the subject is recommended.

Physical, emotional and sexual violence during pregnancy in Malatya, Turkey.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the urinary I excretion of pregnant women in Malatya Province, eastern Turkey. Design and setting: A cross-sectional study was performed on pregnant women in urban and rural settlements of Malatya Province. Subjects: Urinary I excretion was measured for 824 pregnant women who were randomly selected using a probability-proportional-to-size sampling methodology. Results: Median urinary I concentration (UIC) of pregnant women was 77?4 mg/l. The percentage of pregnant women with UIC below 100 mg/l was 83?3. Conclusion: These results indicate that I deficiency disorders (IDD) is still a problem in Malatya Province and most certainly in other parts of the country. Proper monitoring of I content of the salt sold or used in the area, in order to strengthen the IDD intervention programme, is suggested.
