A planar circularly polarized substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) stacked patch antenna array consisting of four sequential-rotation (SR) subarrays is presented for $Ka$ -band applications. Antenna element is realized based on a pair of stacked cavities by the combination of a driven patch layer and a parasitic patch layer, which are formed by a shorted square patch and multiple identical stacked square patches, respectively. Each subarray consisting of two pairs of elements, excited by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) network with four metallic vias, is well matched to a novel SIW SR feeding network. A narrow transverse coupling slot, a semiopening resonant cavity, two pairs of inductive vias, and an inductive window are introduced in the SIW-based feeding network to implement functions of phase shifter, impedance matching, and power divider in the two layers. By employing the proposed SR feeding network, the CPW network, and the four subarrays, the excellent performance of the array is realized. To verify the design, a prototype is fabricated and measured, which demonstrates a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 29.6%, a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 25.4%, and a peak gain of 20.32 dBic.

Planar Wideband Circularly Polarized Cavity-Backed Stacked Patch Antenna Array for Millimeter-Wave Applications

Using aperture-fed stacked curl elements, a full corporate-fed millimeter-wave planar broadband circularly polarized antenna array is proposed. First, the stacked curl element is aperture-fed, using the substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) feeding network. This element is designed under a specific boundary condition, which leads to an excellent agreement of impedance bandwidth and axial ratio (AR) bandwidth between the designed element and the corresponding antenna array. Simulation results show that the antenna element achieves 35.8% impedance bandwidth and 37.8% 3 dB AR bandwidth with a maximum gain of 8.2 dBic. Then, a $2\times 2$ subarray is designed to achieve 33.1% impedance bandwidth. Next, the full-corporate SIW feeding scheme is utilized to construct the $8\times 8$ broadband antenna array. Finally, the $8\times 8$ antenna array is fabricated and its performance is evaluated. Measurement results show that its impedance bandwidth is 35.4%, 3 dB AR bandwidth is 33.8%, and 3 dB gain bandwidth is 32.2% with a peak gain of 23.5 dBic. Considering these three types of bandwidth together, its overall bandwidth is 30.6%. Good efficiency of about 70% is obtained because of the low-loss full-corporate SIW feeding scheme. A $4\times 4$ multibeam array is also simulated to verify the multibeam potential of the proposed antenna array.

Millimeter-Wave Planar Broadband Circularly Polarized Antenna Array Using Stacked Curl Elements

A wideband circularly polarized (CP) $4 \times 4$ millimeter-wave antenna array composed of novel microstrip antenna elements is presented for IEEE 802.11 aj (45 GHz) application. Through introducing the L-shaped branches and truncated corners to the microstrip antenna element, an impedance bandwidth of 24.9% and a 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 17.3% are achieved. To clarify the effects of the L-shaped branches and truncated corners, the phase difference and amplitude ratios of the 180° and 90° electric field components at the point of (0,0,r) are extracted and analyzed. A simple and compact microstrip feeding network is designed to excite the CP antenna array, and two-layer PCB boards are used to implement the proposed array. The electromagnetic energy is coupled to the radiators from the feeding network through the aperture etched on the middle ground. The measured 3 dB AR bandwidth of the antenna array is 16% from 41.9 to 49.1 GHz, and the measured gain is all greater than 17 dBic within the band from 41 to 49 GHz.

Compact Wideband Circularly Polarized Microstrip Antenna Array for 45 GHz Application

A novel Ka-band dual-band dual-circularly-polarized antenna array is presented in this letter. A dual-band antenna with left-hand circular polarization for the Ka-band downlink frequencies and right-hand circular polarization for the Ka-band uplink frequencies is realized with compact annular ring slots. By applying the sequential rotation technique, a 2 × 2 subarray with good performance is obtained. This letter describes the design process and presents simulation and measurement results.

A Dual-Band Dual-Circular-Polarization Antenna for Ka-Band Satellite Communications

This communication presents a microstrip patch array, using sequentially rotated feed networks to achieve dual circular polarization in the same band. By interlacing the microstrip patches of adjacent $2 \times 2$ subarrays, the element spacing is minimized to avoid the challenging grating lobe issue. In this manner, the number of radiating elements is reduced from the conventional 4N to $2N + 2$ , where $N$ is the number of $2 \times 2$ subarrays. The array is implemented on a two-layer substrate, with the upper layer hosting the microstrip patch array and the sequentially rotated networks, and the lower layer hosting the power dividers, sharing a common ground plane in the middle. To validate this novel configuration, a prototype is fabricated and measured. It achieves both $\vert S11\vert dB and axial ratio < 3 dB bandwidth of 12.5% (4.95–5.61 GHz) for right-hand circular polarization and 14.7% (5.05–5.85 GHz) for left-hand circular polarization. The isolation between the orthogonal circularly polarized ports is about 12 dB in band.

A Compact Dual Circularly Polarized Microstrip Patch Array With Interlaced Sequentially Rotated Feed

A novel -band wideband circularly polarized 64-element microstrip antenna array is presented in this letter. It is developed with double application of the sequential rotation feeding technique. The array employs corner-truncated microstrip patches as the basic element, and then a four-element array as the subarray. By applying the sequential rotation technique twice to design the feed networks, a full 64-element array with good performance is obtained. A prototype of the full array was constructed and tested. The measurement results show that both the reflection coefficient of less than 10 dB and axial ratio of less than 3 dB have been achieved over a frequency band of 27-31 GHz; this corresponds to a wide bandwidth of 13.8%. Due to its planar configuration, the proposed array can find good applications in aerospace, radar, and communication systems.

Development of a $Ka$ -Band Wideband Circularly Polarized 64-Element Microstrip Antenna Array With Double Application of the Sequential Rotation Feeding Technique

Sequential rotation feeding networks can significantly improve performance of the circularly polarized microstrip antenna array. In this paper, single, double, and multiple series-parallel sequential rotation feeding networks are examined. Compared with conventional parallel feeding structures, these multilevel feeding techniques present reduction of loss, increase of bandwidth, and improvement of radiation pattern and polarization purity. By using corner-truncated square patch as the array element and adopting appropriate level of sequential rotation series-parallel feeding structures as feeding networks, microstrip arrays can generate excellent circular polarization (CP) over a relatively wide frequency band. They can find wide applications in phased array radar and satellite communication systems.

Design of Multilevel Sequential Rotation Feeding Networks Used for Circularly Polarized Microstrip Antenna Arrays

In this paper, a dual circularly polarized mircostrip antenna with wide impedance matching and radiation bandwidth is proposed. The antenna can realize the LHCP and RHCP radiation[1] with high transceiver isolation of simultaneous operation. The proposed antenna consists of feed network, a radiating patch and parasitic radiating structures which further improve the matching and radiation pattern bandwidth and lower profile. The simulation results show that the proposed antenna has stable radiation patterns frequency band from 2.1 to 2.5 GHz with the ports isolation better than 20dB. By controlling the amplitude and phase of the bridge feed network, the two ports can simultaneously generate LHCP and RHCP radiation.
