How do app icon color and border shape influence visual search efficiency and user experience? Evidence from an eye-tracking study

Elderly people are not likely to recognize road signs due to low cognitive ability and presbyopia. In our study, three shapes of traffic symbols (circles, squares, and triangles) which are most commonly used in road driving were used to evaluate the elderly drivers’ recognition. When traffic signs are randomly shown in HUD (head-up display), subjects compare them with the symbol displayed outside of the vehicle. In this test, we conducted a Go/Nogo test and determined the differences in ERP (event-related potential) data between correct and incorrect answers of EEG signals. As a result, the wrong answer rate for the elderly was 1.5 times higher than for the youths. All generation groups had a delay of 20–30 ms of P300 with incorrect answers. In order to achieve clearer differentiation, ERP data were modeled with unsupervised machine learning and supervised deep learning. The young group’s correct/incorrect data were classified well using unsupervised machine learning with no pre-processing, but the elderly group’s data were not. On the other hand, the elderly group’s data were classified with a high accuracy of 75% using supervised deep learning with simple signal processing. Our results can be used as a basis for the implementation of a personalized safe driving system for the elderly.

Traffic Sign Recognition Evaluation for Senior Adults Using EEG Signals.

Older adults are a significant part of the world population and new Information Technologies (ITs) will have an essential role in maintaining the quality of life and social integration of this population. However, the interfaces of different Its—especially smartphones—do not yet satisfy the characteristics, needs and expectations of older adults since they present physical, cognitive and emotional barriers that disappoint these users. The present study was based on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), and aimed to analyze the main barriers experienced by older adults when using smartphones. Three aspects were highlighted for the present analysis: the physical, cognitive and emotional. The SLR has shown that much progress has been made to understand the interaction problems between older users and smartphones. However, many barriers remain, creating difficulties of use and limiting the effective contribution of IT to these users. Thus, guidelines based on physical, cognitive and emotional aspects, essential for the new ergonomic design of smartphones, are compiled and presented.

Understanding the Barriers and Challenges Between Older Users and Smartphones: A Systematic Literature Review

This study aims to expand upon the understanding of the multifaceted usability issues older adults encounter when using intelligent products. This was achieved by synthesizing extant research findings to come to an understanding of why usability issues still exist in intelligent products for older adults in China, even when appropriate design features are incorporated. This review was conducted by searching the literature on the Scopus, Springer, ScienceDirect, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases as well as Google Scholar using the terms “older adults in China”, “intelligent products”, and “usability.” Forty-three studies from between 2007 and 2022 were included in the review. The results reveal three salient aspects directly related to the usability issues of intelligent products experienced by older adults in China: (1) the usefulness of the product; (2) the ease of use of the product; and (3) the impact of the policy. The first two impact the effectiveness of the use of intelligent products, while the lack of policy intervention in the management system of intelligent products results in product clutter. This review provides insights for designers by proposing a conceptual framework for an intelligent product service platform for older adults, which will help researchers and research teams better understand the usability issues according to older adults’ feedback on intelligent products. We suggest a unified standard for intelligent product management in the future that is compatible across systems and reduces older adults’ learning stress.

The Usability Issues Encountered in the Design Features of Intelligent Products for Older Adults in China: A Scoping Review

Smart homes represent an effective approach to improve one’s quality of life. Developing user interfaces that are both comfortable and understandable can assist users, particularly the elderly, embrace smart home technologies. It’s critical to concentrate on the characteristics of smart home interface design and their impact on people of various ages. Since sliders are one of the most common components utilized in the smart home user interface, this article aimed to investigate the effects of slider design characteristics (e.g., button size, track color, and sliding orientation) on user performance and preference. Thirty-four participants were recruited for the experiment (16 for the young group, aged between 18 and 44 years; 18 for the middle-aged and elderly group, aged between 45 years and above). Our results revealed that both groups had shorter task completion time, less fixation time, and saccades on horizontal sliding orientation and larger buttons, which means better user performance. For the older group, the slider with color gradient track led to better user performance, while the track color only had less effect on the performance of the younger group. In terms of user preference, the results and performance of the older group were basically consistent, while the younger group had no significant difference in sliding orientation and track color.

Study on Smart Home Interface Design Characteristics Considering the Influence of Age Difference: Focusing on Sliders

With the development of society, the smart phone for the elderly has been developed rapidly. To improve the design of the smart phone icons for the elderly, a set of experiments were made to study the usability differences between multi-colored icons and monochromatic icons. 8 pairs of icons where a pair of icons was composed of a multi-colored icon and a monochromatic icon with the same function were prepared. These 16 icons whose height are 9.81 mm were placed in random order in the Xiaomi MI 4 smart phone installed with the android system. 24 retired teachers aged from 60–70 of the university were called as participants. They were asked to find the right icon as required and click on it with one of their fingers. For every subjects, there were 6 finding tasks followed by satisfaction questionnaire surveys. Eye movement data and satisfaction questionnaire surveys data were acquired and analyzed to get the results: monochromatic flat icons were easier to recognize and operate than the ones that designed with multi-colors for old people, even though they may have monotonous forms; age 60–65 or 66–70 was not the reason one made an operation mistake; some older people liked multi-colored flat icons more than monochromatic flat icons for their colorful vision experience.
