Designs for traditional drills and sample retrieval mechanisms to be deployed from rovers or planetary landers suffer from high mechanical complexity, part count, and mass; and also high minimum power, torque and preload requirements, given the problems of insitu drillstring assembly and the inevitably high f riction between the drillstring and the sides of the shaft during augering. A conceptual systems architecture is therefore proposed, requiring minimal on-station assembly, to deliver a n ultrasonic coring bit to a depth of several meters whilst simultaneously securing the s haft against collapse, preventing the ingress of windblown dust and providing a conduit f or sample removal. This system would be based around a coilable tube, which can apply th e continuous slight preload required by ultrasonic bits, and in the case of deployment from a surface rover can be easily recoiled at the conclusion of drilling to be redeployed at a ne w location.

A Simple, Lightweight and Low-Reaction Deployable Architecture for Subsurface Sample Retrieval

A system for automated sampling of rocks, ice, and similar hard materials at and immediately below the surface of the ground is undergoing development. The system, denoted a sample preparation, acquisition, handling, and delivery (SPAHD) device, would be mounted on a robotic exploratory vehicle that would traverse the terrain of interest on the Earth or on a remote planet. The SPAHD device would probe the ground to obtain data for optimization of sampling, prepare the surface, acquire samples in the form(s) of cores and/or powdered cuttings, and deliver the samples to a selected location for analysis and/or storage.
