We report on the design and performance of the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), a general purpose optical integral field spectrograph that has been installed at the Nasmyth port of the 10 m Keck II telescope on Mauna Kea, HI. The novel design provides blue-optimized seeing-limited imaging from 350-560 nm with configurable spectral resolution from 1000 - 20000 in a field of view up to 20"x33". Selectable volume phase holographic (VPH) gratings and high performance dielectric, multilayer silver and enhanced aluminum coatings provide end-to-end peak efficiency in excess of 45% while accommodating the future addition of a red channel that will extend wavelength coverage to 1 micron. KCWI takes full advantage of the excellent seeing and dark sky above Mauna Kea with an available nod-and-shuffle observing mode. The instrument is optimized for observations of faint, diffuse objects such as the intergalactic medium or cosmic web. In this paper, a detailed description of the instrument design is provided with measured performance results from the laboratory test program and ten nights of on-sky commissioning during the spring of 2017. The KCWI team is lead by Caltech and JPL (project management, design and implementation) in partnership with the University of California at Santa Cruz (camera optical and mechanical design) and the W. M. Keck Observatory (observatory interfaces).

One core goal of the Kepler mission was to determine the frequency of Earth-like planets that orbit Sun-like stars. Accurately estimating this planet occurrence rate requires both a well-vetted list of planets and a clear understanding of the stars searched for planets. Previous ground-based follow-up observations have, through a variety of methods, sought to improve our knowledge of stars that are known to host planets. Kepler targets without detected planets, however, have not been subjected to the same intensity of follow-up observations. In this paper, we constrain better the stellar multiplicity for stars around which Kepler could have theoretically detected a transiting Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone. We subsequently aim to improve estimates of the exoplanet search completeness—the fraction of exoplanets that were detected by Kepler—with our analysis. By obtaining adaptive optics observations of 71 Kepler target stars from the Shane 3 m telescope at Lick Observatory, we detected 14 candidate stellar companions within 4'' of 13 target stars. Of these 14 candidate stellar companions, we determine through multiple independent methods that 3 are likely to be bound to their corresponding target star. We then assess the impact of our observations on exoplanet occurrence rate calculations, finding an increase in occurrence of 6% (0.9σ) for various estimates of the frequency of Earth-like planets and an increase of 26% (4.5σ) for super-Earths and sub-Neptunes. These occurrence increases are not entirely commensurate with theoretical predictions, though this discrepancy may be due to differences in the treatment of stellar binarity.

A Closer Look at Exoplanet Occurrence Rates: Considering the Multiplicity of Stars without Detected Planets

Pulsed sodium laser guide stars (LGS) are useful because they allow for Rayleigh blanking and fratricide avoidance in multiple-LGS systems. Bloch equation simulations of sodium–light interactions show that these may be able to achieve photon returns nearly equal to, and in some cases greater than, what is seen from CW excitation. In this work, we study the time-dependent characteristics of sodium fluorescence and investigate the optimal format for the new fiber laser LGS that will be part of the upgraded adaptive optics system on the Shane Telescope at Mt. Hamilton. Results of this analysis are examined in the context of their general applicability to other LGS systems and the potential benefits of uplink correction are considered. Comparisons of simulation predictions with measurements from existing LGS are also presented and discussed.

Toward optimization of pulsed sodium laser guide stars

The public, all-sky surveys Gaia and TESS provide the ability to identify new young associations and determine their ages. These associations enable study of planetary evolution by providing new opportunities to discover young exoplanets. A young association was recently identified by Tang et al. and Fürnkranz et al. using astrometry from Gaia (called “Group-X” by the former). In this work, we investigate the age and membership of this association, and we validate the exoplanet TOI 2048 b, which was identified to transit a young, late G dwarf in Group-X using photometry from TESS. We first identified new candidate members of Group-X using Gaia EDR3 data. To infer the age of the association, we measured rotation periods for candidate members using TESS data. The clear color–period sequence indicates that the association is the same age as the 300 ± 50 Myr old NGC 3532. We obtained optical spectra for candidate members that show lithium absorption consistent with this young age. Further, we serendipitously identify a new, small association nearby Group-X, which we call MELANGE-2. Lastly, we statistically validate TOI 2048 b, which is a 2.1 ± 0.2 R ⊕ radius planet on a 13.8-day orbit around its 300 Myr old host star.

TESS Hunt for Young and Maturing Exoplanets (THYME). VII. Membership, Rotation, and Lithium in the Young Cluster Group-X and a New Young Exoplanet

The James Webb Space Telescope will be able to probe the atmospheres and surface properties of hot, terrestrial planets via emission spectroscopy. We identify 18 potentially terrestrial planet candidates detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) that would make ideal targets for these observations. These planet candidates cover a broad range of planet radii (R p ∼ 0.6–2.0R ⊕) and orbit stars of various magnitudes (K s = 5.78–10.78, V = 8.4–15.69) and effective temperatures (T eff ∼ 3000–6000 K). We use ground-based observations collected through the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP) and two vetting tools—DAVE and TRICERATOPS—to assess the reliabilities of these candidates as planets. We validate 13 planets: TOI-206 b, TOI-500 b, TOI-544 b, TOI-833 b, TOI-1075 b, TOI-1411 b, TOI-1442 b, TOI-1693 b, TOI-1860 b, TOI-2260 b, TOI-2411 b, TOI-2427 b, and TOI-2445 b. Seven of these planets (TOI-206 b, TOI-500 b, TOI-1075 b, TOI-1442 b, TOI-2260 b, TOI-2411 b, and TOI-2445 b) are ultra-short-period planets. TOI-1860 is the youngest (133 ± 26 Myr) solar twin with a known planet to date. TOI-2260 is a young (321 ± 96 Myr) G dwarf that is among the most metal-rich ([Fe/H] = 0.22 ± 0.06 dex) stars to host an ultra-short-period planet. With an estimated equilibrium temperature of ∼2600 K, TOI-2260 b is also the fourth hottest known planet with R p < 2 R ⊕.

Validation of 13 Hot and Potentially Terrestrial TESS Planets

We present preliminary laboratory cryogenic test results for the Coronagraph Slide mechanism, which allows observers the choice of up to 4 coronagraphic focal plane masks when using SCALES (Santa Cruz Array of Lenslets for Exoplanet Spectroscopy). SCALES is a 2-5 micron high-contrast lenslet integral field spectrograph currently undergoing preliminary design for the W. M. Keck Observatory. When deployed behind the Keck Adaptive Optics system, SCALES will be used to detect and characterize a wide variety of exoplanets. To minimize thermal emission, all optical and mechanical components of SCALES are fully cryogenic. The Coronagraph Slide is the first fully cryogenic mechanism for SCALES designed, built, and tested in-house at UCSC with mostly off-the-shelf components.

The Lick Observatory 3-meter telescope has a history of serving as a testbed for innovative adaptive optics techniques.
In 1996, it became one of the first astronomical observatories to employ laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics as a
facility instrument available to the astronomy community. Work on a second-generation LGS adaptive optics system,
ShaneAO, is well underway, with plans to deploy on telescope in 2013. In this paper we discuss key design features and
implementation plans for the ShaneAO adaptive optics system. Once again, the Shane 3-m will host a number of new
techniques and technologies vital to the development of future adaptive optics systems on larger telescopes. Included is a
woofer-tweeter based wavefront correction system incorporating a voice-coil actuated, low spatial and temporal
bandwidth, high stroke deformable mirror in conjunction with a high order, high bandwidth MEMs deformable mirror.
The existing dye laser, in operation since 1996, will be replaced with a fiber laser recently developed at Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratories. The system will also incorporate a high-sensitivity, high bandwidth wavefront sensor
camera. Enhanced IR performance will be achieved by replacing the existing PICNIC infrared array with an Hawaii
2RG. The updated ShaneAO system will provide opportunities to test predictive control algorithms for adaptive optics.
Capabilities for astronomical spectroscopy, polarimetry, and visible-light adaptive optical astronomy will be supported.
