A coated abrasive article comprises a backing, a first binder on the backing, and a plurality of abrasive particles in the first binder. The first binder precursor is an energy-curable preferably, melt-processable resin containing an epoxy resin, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and a curing agent for crosslinking the epoxy resin that is cured to provide a crosslinked make coating. The above binder precursors of the invention are preferably free of homopolymers and copolymers of olefinic monomers. In another aspect, the invention also describes an energy curable first binder precursor containing an epoxy resin, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, a polyfunctional acrylate component and a curing agent for crosslinking the epoxy resin that is cured to provide a crosslinked make coating. The invention also relates to a method of producing such coated abrasive articles and a surface-treated backing material.

An activatable material and articles incorporating the same is disclosed. The activatable material includes at least three of an epoxy resin; a thermoplastic polyether; a blowing agent; a curing agent; and a filler. The activatable material is preferably used for sealing, baffling or reinforcing an article of manufacture such as an automotive vehicle (26).

The present invention relates to a material, method, and application for reinforcement of structural members (10), especially joints such as a hem flange joint of an automobile. The method and material of the present invention comprises of combining, in parts by weight: less than about twenty percent (<20%) ethylene copolymer, less than about forty percent (<40%) epoxy, less than about thirty percent (<45%) epoxy-based resin, less than about two percent (<2%) blowing agent and from about one percent (1%) to about five percent (5%) curing agent (and optionally add any of the following components: less than about two percent (<2%) curing agent accelerator, from about twenty-five percent (25%) to fifty-five percent (55%) filler, and less than about one percent (<1%) of coloring agent). The application of the present invention comprises of: (1) providing a structural member (10) having two substrates (20, 30) forming a space to be joined (40); (2) placing the material (50) of the present invention in proximity of the space to be joined (40); (3) exposing the material (50) to a heat source causing it to flow, fill, and cure in the defined area or space to be joined (40).

Structural hot melt material and methods

The present invention relates to methods, materials, and products for forming a foamed product, comprising the steps of combining an epoxy-based component with an amine-based component. The epoxy component is cross-linked through a polymerization reaction catalyzed by the amine formulation. In this regard, a reactive mixture or exothermic reaction is created between the epoxy component and the amine component when combined. The heat generated by the exothermic reaction softens a thermoplastic shell of a blowing agent formulated within the epoxy component thereby enabling a solvent core within the thermoplastic shell of the blowing agent to expand from the heat generated by the exothermic reaction.

A curable composition formed by mixing components comprising 10 to 70 weight percent of a curable epoxy resin; an effective amount of a curative for the epoxy resin; 10 to 85 weight percent of a thermoplastic ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer; and 5 to 60 weight percent of a thermoplastic polyester resin, the parts by weight being based on the total weight of the resin in the composition.
