Reflecting on the past, present, and future of digital scholarship in sport history, this article introduces the “Doing Sport History in the Digital Present” special issue as evidence of a burgeoning engagement with the digital humanities by sport historians and sport history by digital humanists. Asking what new approaches in the digital humanities might offer for the study of sport history, we first revisit recent, and nascent, discussions of sport history in the digital era. We next discuss the ways in which the contributors to the special issue move the field forward through a connected process of doing and writing digital sport history by both utilization and critique of its sources, tools, and platforms. Finally, we conclude with a look ahead to the continued and future impact of new techniques and literacies on the field of sport history.

Doing Sport History in the Digital Present

Zarys treści: Piłka nożna, jak każdy sport i jak większość zjawisk, ma swój wymiar przestrzenny. Jest także – z racji swojej popularności – odbiciem zmian społecznych i demografi cznych. Artykuł prezentuje charakterystyki ilościowe i jakościowe wybranych klubów piłkarskich, z naciskiem na przestrzenno-demografi czne cechy piłkarzy. Pod uwagę wzięto trzy sezony z dwudziestolecia międzywojennego i jeden z pierwszych sezonów rozgrywanych w czasach PRL. Analiza zebranych danych zaowocowała propozycją metodyki prezentacji wieloatrybutowych danych sportowych, a także pozwoliła unaocznić m.in. wpływ geopolityki i zmian przestrzennych na sport. Dotyczy to przede wszystkim migracji powojennych, relacji zmian granic do sportowej mapy Polski oraz roli wybranych ośrodków w kształtowaniu przestrzennej charakterystyki polskiej piłki nożnej.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the ability to georeference, or link, historic maps and photographs to current digital map images. The technology allows researchers of historic sporting landscapes to document change, assemble predictive models that identify potential archaeological sites, and more accurately interpret historic sites. This article examines the historic locations of baseball parks in Indianapolis, Indiana, and uses Washington Park to demonstrate GIS methods. Constructed in 1905 and site of the first Negro National League game in 1920, the park was demolished in the mid 1930s. Its landscape had changed so dramatically that no feature of the park can be recognized. The precision of GIS applications allowed the identification of several of the park’s features, including the key location of home plate (86° 10′ 54″ W, 39° 46′ 1″ N). As a result, several public history interpretive features and programs are being implemented to commemorate this unique landmark of the city’s sports history.
